Ulster Championship

Our 2023 Ulster campaign was short and sweet with defeat at the first hurdle against a more ‘on-the-ball’ Liatroim team last Sunday. The stage was Pairc Esler, Newry as the curtain raiser for Kilcoo & Scotstown and its fair to say the Co.Down champions certainly didn’t let the occasion get to them and came out of the blocks much the quicker. Indeed after 24 minutes we only had one point on the board, a free from Eddie Walsh as Liatroim were 0-04 to 0-01 up and could and should have been further ahead if it wasn’t for some good defending and wasted chances. We kicked into gear then for the final 5 minutes of the 1st half dominating possession but could only muster up two points from frees from the boot of Eddie Walsh. Perhaps with a little more imagination up front we could have gone in level at the very least. Liatroim came out in the 2nd half with plenty of gusto, perhaps with having a preliminary match the week previous under their belts proving advantageous, whereas we were still wasteful in possession and finding it difficult to break past the Liatroim ’45. Two converted frees inside the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half saw Liatroim extend their lead to 3 points. It was time to freshen things up from our side and Conor Vernon & Conaill Marry were introduced early in the 2nd half to try and add some more power & pace. On 42 minutes, a good move then down the left flank resulted in Cillian Leegan fielding well inside the ’45, calling the mark and duly slotting over to reduce the gap to 2 but another Liatroim free 5 minutes later restored their lead to 3. With 10 minutes to go another good passage of play involving the tireless Dean Connolly resulted in another free which Eddie Walsh duly struck over. At this stage it did look as if Liatroim had done too much too soon and were beginning to tire and with only 3 minutes remaining we managed to reduce the gap to a single point from another Eddie Walsh free kick. 0-07 to 0-06 with time running out, but we had found a foothold and looked sure to get the equalizer to send it to extra-time, but Liatroim had other ideas and broke quickly to cut us open down the middle to put 2 between us again. The response was immediate though as Ronan Grimes started and finished a good move to slot over in the 60th minute to again heap the pressure on Liatroim. In the 2nd minute of injury time then from a good run down the right flank Tiernan Duffy fired in a high ball into the square where Gavin Flanagan was waiting but a blatant push on Flanagan was somehow ignored by the referee and play continued as Liatroim cleared their lines. We did have one last chance when we turned over the ball in the middle of the park but with Eddie Walsh in space to get away and make his attack on goals the ball squirted away inches from his grasp and Liatroim regained possession and put the final nail in our coffin fisting the ball over the bar in the final minute of injury time to lead by 2 and close out the game on a scoreline of 0-09 to 0-07. It was a day when nothing seemed to go right for us, but you would have to say that the hungrier team came out on top on the day.

Team & scorers; Kian Duffy, Oisin Burns, Ronan Duffy, Robert Berg, Ronan Grimes (0-01), Tiernan Duffy, Cillian Leegan (0-01), Callum Murray, Dean Connolly (C), Michael Vernon, Stephen McMahon, Eddie Walsh (0-05), Daniel Leegan, Killian Collins, Mark Grimes. Subs used: Kyle Connolly, Conaill Marry, Conor Vernon, Daryl Traynor, Gavin Flanagan

So, the curtain comes down on another hugely successful year overall but with a slight tinge on what might have been in Ulster. On behalf of the committee, we would like to thank all players, backroom staff, supporters & volunteers and especially our management team of Fra, Paddy & Jimmy who gave us all some great days out. We look forward to the challenge of Senior football in 2024!
