Intermediate Championship
We got our Championship campaign back on track with a good win away to Emyvale last Saturday evening. It was a cagey opening quarter with scores at a premium and we led 0-02 to 0-01 at the water break with points from Aodhan McConnon & Killian Collins. With Kian Duffy having made a great save from an Emyvale penalty early on, we were awarded one of our own in the 16th minute and Stephen McMahon made no mistake to slot the ball home. Emyvale though hit four points in a row then to level things approaching halftime but a big push from us in the final two minutes of the half saw three more scores, a Kian Duffy ’45, Danny Leegan from play and a Stephen McMahon free to send us in 1-05 to 0-05 up. Emyvale’s response was immediate, and within a minute of the restart they had the ball in the back of our net following a slick move from the heart of their defence. Frees were exchanged then in the 35th & 36th minutes before a scramble in the Emyvale goalmouth ended with Ronan Grimes rising highest to punch the ball to the net. A further blow to Emyvale’s chances was the black card award to their no.6 just before the 2nd water break which was compounded 10 mins later with another black card for their full back for a reckless challenge on Dean Connolly. Stephen McMahon converted another free in the 49th minute before Emyvale pulled back two more with good scores from play to close to within two points, but their effort was short lived and a fine score from Killian Collins was followed by a great individual goal from Danny Leegan who capitalised on a defensive error to fire past the Emyvale keeper and put us six points up with only 3 mins to play. Killian Collins capped off a fine personal display with the last score of the match to make it 3-09 to 1-08.
Our last group match is at home to Toome on Sunday 17th Sept at 2.00pm with a win guaranteeing second spot in the group and a home quarter-final.
