Intermediate Championship

Castleblayney Faughs were the opposition for our Intermediate Championship Quarter Final in Carrickmacross on Sunday last. We made a lightning-fast start and were three points to nil up after only 4 minutes, courtesy of a brace of points from Eddie Walsh and one from Michael Vernon. Blayney were soon level though with frees in the 7th & 11th minutes followed by their first from play on the quarter hour mark. We responded in kind 2 minutes later though when patient build up and great work from Killian Collins resulted in him drawing a free which Eddie Walsh converted. The game was certainly cagey with both sets of defences standing firm and it wasn’t until the 25th minutes until we registered again, another free from Eddie Walsh. From the resultant kick-out we managed a good turnover which led to Eddie Walsh firing over a good score from play to extend the gap to three points approaching half-time. Blayney again moved the ball quicker from the kick-out and worked another good score from play in the 28th minute, but two big scores for us came in the dying moments of the half, a Killian Collins conversion followed by an Eddie Walsh free which sent us in 0-08 to 0-04 up at the break. The first score of the second half was going to be big, but again defences were on top in the early stages until Blayney found a gap in the 39th minute to fire over from play. Danny Leegan, who was living off scraps in the inside forward line finally got his hands on the ball and hit a fine point to regain the four-point advantage. Blayney were awarded a free soon after and their marksman made no mistake to again close the gap to three. The big score for us then arrived in the 46th minute when a swift counterattack down the heart of the Blayney rearguard resulted in Stephen McMahon dancing in behind the last line of defence to fire the ball low to the net and send the majority of the massive crowd into raptures! Blayney however showing their experience did not panic and hit two quick-fire scores to reduce the gap back to four points with still 10 minutes to play. We were certainly in need of a score, just to quell the Faughs comeback, and up stepped Gavin Flanagan who had just been introduced as a substitute – he found himself in space one-on-one inside the full back line and with the onrushing keeper closing him down, did the right thing in fisting the ball over the bar. Blayney again responded from play to stay within four and with time running out for them it was going to take a goal for them to get anything from the game. Sure enough the chance presented itself in the final minute of normal time but Conaill Marry was in the right place at the right time to produce a brilliant stop on the goal-line. Blayney managed a point from the rebound to make it a one-score game and on winning a turnover from the resultant kick-out, again came bearing down on goal but Kian Duffy made a great save low to his right to keep his goal intact. There was huge relief moments later when the referee blew the fulltime whistle on a great performance with the only blip on the day being the late sending-off of Killian Collins for a second yellow card. We now have a spot in the semi-final where we will face Monaghan Harps in Inniskeen on Sunday 15th October.
