Seniors: Saturday the 21st of October was a day which will live long in the memory of Aughnamullen players and supporters alike, as our senior team defeated Truagh in the Senior Championship Relegation Play-off Final in Clontibret on a scoreline of 0-13 to 0-12. In what was a slow first half, Aughnamullen did get off to a strong start and with the aid of three Micheál Bannigan frees went three points to one up after 20 minutes. However, the remainder of the half was to be dominated by Truagh and with five points without reply in the next ten minutes, they found themselves up 0-06 0-03 at half time. Aughnamullen had work to do, and perhaps could have been down by more at half time. Lee Conlan’s words of wisdom at the break worked wonders, as the boys came out flying at the start of the second half. Three more frees from Bannigan along with an excellent long range point from Tiernan Duffy turned the tables and put us ahead once again 0-07 to 0-06. Coming into the final quarter of the game, Truagh needed a purple patch of their own, and they got it when they scored the next two points to retake the lead with under ten minutes to go. What followed was some of the most intense football endured by Aughnamullen spectators in many a year, with drama that wasn’t for the faint hearted. A Micheál Bannigan free brought it back to a one point game and with just under a minute to go, just like he did in Clontibret in the Intermediate Championship Semi Final in 2021, Jason Duffy found the all important equaliser with a left footed free to bring it to extra time. The tension around the ground was palpable as we entered the extra time period, with only two scores coming in the first half. Truagh opened the scoring, with our reply coming from a brilliant score from a mark from Pete Dooney. The scores remained level at half time, with a replay looking likely. Immediately after the break it was Cillian Traynor who took the initiative and took an excellent score to give Aughnamullen the lead, with Traynor racking up quite the tally for himself this year. If one was to look for a definition of ‘impact sub’, the result would be Kieran ‘Whack’ Duffy, who popped up with a score to put us two ahead with under five minutes remaining. The heart rate of the Aughnamullen and Truagh faithful alike went through the roof, as Truagh once again found two scores without reply to bring it to a draw game with a replay looking destined. With time almost up, a brilliant turnover on a Truagh attack found its way to Kieran Duffy, who sailed over the winning score to send the Aughnamullen crowd into dreamland. The drama wasn’t over yet, as Truagh launched another ball into the square to find its way to one of their players for one last roll of the dice, as a shot came in low and hard past the post and wide, much to the relief of the Aughnamullen faithful. The referee’s whistle blew and it’s was a mix of relief, ecstasy and emotion as Aughnamullen had taken another scalp in this year’s championship to retain Senior status for 2024. The character shown by the team was so much that a single man of the match would be hard named, whether it be safe as houses Thomas Marron in goals, Aaron McGee playing like a man possessed in the full back line, Joel Wilson in midfield to name but a few, it took an entire team performance from 1-30 to see this one over the line. On behalf of the club we would like to thank the team and management team of Lee Conlan, John Joe Gorman, Mickey Ward, Seamus Markey and Paul Kearney and first aid Rose Mooney for all their work and commitment this year. Here’s to an even better 2024.
