Monaghan Club Football Championships

With the Group stage of the 2023 Men’s Monaghan Senior Club Championships completed, the knockout stages commenced last weekend with the quarter finals of the Senior Championships. Last Sunday afternoon our Senior Men travelled to Clontibret for the quarter final of the Greenfield Foods Senior Championship where they played Aughnamullen. Well done to the team and management in their win and qualifying for the Semi Final which will be in Clones this Sunday against Corduff.

The Blues started strongly and after 7 minutes were a goal up from a well placed penalty converted by Jack McCarron after Ryan O’Toole was brought down. Aughnamullen responded promptly closing their deficit to a point making the score 1-0 to 0-2, but Scotstown extended their lead to 4 points with fine points by Damian McArdle, Darren Hughes, Jack McCarron (2) and Shane Carey making the score 1-5 to 0-4 after 20 minutes. Scotstown extended their lead further with 2 brilliant points from play, one each from Ryan O’Toole and Conor McCarthy making the half time score 1-7 to 0-5. Scotstown started the second half strongly and within 3 minutes had extended their lead to 7 points with 2 well placed points by Darren Hughes and Jack McCarron. However Aughnamullen made a spirited comeback and were 3 points behind on 10 minutes after a goal and a point. The Blues found an extra gear and restored a 6 point lead with 3 excellent points by Michael McCarville, Rory Beggan (from Free) and Ryan Malley making the score 1-12 to 1-6 after 17 minutes. Scotstown defended their lead well and with further well placed points by Darragh Murray and Shane Carey went into injury time maintaining a 6 point lead. A superb goal by Killian McKenna in injury time booked the Semi Final spot making a full time score Scotstown 2-14 Aughnamullen 1-8. Well done to the team and management. Thanks to Clontibret GAA for superbly hosting.
