Seniors: Our seniors got off the mark in this year’s Senior Football Championship on Sunday evening with a brilliant 3-10 to 1-07 win away to Ballybay. Unlike previous games, Aughnamullen dominated the encounter from start to finish, winning every battle and putting on a serious performance of intent to run out comfortable winners against the county Champions. Two points from Micheál Bannigan were the only scores in the opening ten minutes of the game. Ballybay eventually got off the mark with a point, however this was responded with further scores with Bannigan and Kevin Sheridan to cancel out each of the host’s scores. With less than five minutes to go in the first half, Bobby McCaul popped up with a superbly taken goal after a brilliant team move to push our lead out to five points. Ballybay did reply with two points of their own, until Aughnamullen struck a killer blow to the host’s momentum before the break when smart buildup from the Geoghegan brothers, Darren and Stephen, found Kevin Sheridan who cut in and tried his best to tear a hole in the Ballybay net with an exceptional left foot finish into the top corner. A Mark McArdle score just before the half time whistle ensured that we would have a healthy seven point lead at the break on a scoreline of 2-05 to 0-04. The boys picked up where they left off at the start of the second half, with Micheál Bannigan converting a free to extend our lead to eight. The hosts began to attempt a comeback, but to the credit of the resolute Aughnamullen defence, who put on an inspirational display in shutting down the Ballybay attacks, scores were hard to come by. Another point from the excellent Kevin Sheridan was complimented by the incredible fielding by Bobby McCaul, who clearly had his porridge for breakfast judging by the athleticism on show. An all round top team performance, led by an exhilarating display from Micheál Bannigan was too much for the hosts and a well worked team move palmed into the net by Joel Wilson put the game beyond doubt. A Ballybay goal in injury

time drew the game to a conclusion and the boys ran out nine point winners. The only negative to this day was the injuries suffered by Joel Wilson and Shane Conlon, who both showed serious leadership in the win. We want to wish both men a quick recovery. The lads will be hoping to build on this result this Saturday afternoon in Aughnamullen when we host Truagh at 3.30pm in the next round of the Championship. Come out and support the team in what will be a bumper day of football in Aughnamullen, with our Senior ladies taking the field in their Junior Championship game against Monaghan Harps at 6pm. Best of luck to both teams and management.

Juveniles:

Under 17s: Our Under 17s were victorious in the Division 2 Shield Final on Monday evening against Inniskeen in Cremartin, winning on a scoreline of 1-17 to 2-12. In a game where the Aughnamullen boys never found themselves behind, the boys were on it from the first whistle. Callum Hughes opened the scoring with a well taken point from the left foot, a foot that would prove essential with further free kick conversions from afar during the game. The teams traded scores for the opening fifteen minutes until a moment of class from the excellent Christopher Geoghegan resulted in our only goal of the game to put daylight between the teams. However, the goal seemed to spur Inniskeen on and the six point lead soon was reeled back and not before long it was a draw game once again with two goals. The boys responded well and finished the half on a strong note, scoring three points on the trot to lead by three at the break on a scoreline of 1-09 to 2-03. The three point advantage was maintained for the third quarter of the game, with Aughnamullen eventually extending the lead to seven. However, Inniskeen didn’t back down and brought a late comeback, reducing the deficit to just a single point in the final minutes. The Aughnamullen defence stood firm and held on for what was a brilliant win in a cracking game. Congratulations to the team and management team of Philip Lambe, Martin Woods, Colin Clerkin and Sean Sheridan and first aid Rosemary Johnston.
