Toome Club Notes 01.06.2023

May 31st, 2023

U11’s: The under 11’s gave a great account of themselves on Tuesday last where they played out a match against Aghabog, some great skills on display and a great turnout. This week the U11’s will play a home fixture against Emyvale on Thursday 1st June at 7:00pm in St Victors Park, please be sure to come along and see these young ballers.

Intermediate League: It was the perfect evening for football on Friday last 26th May. Toome hosted Carrickmacross for what was another tough fixture. Despite a number of injuries, the lads were in good spirits and determined to answer a few critics. The first half was a tense affair with both teams being very evenly matched and answering score for score, then through a defensive error a ball was played through to Carrick and they had no hesitation in making the home side pay with a clinical finish and hitting the back of the net. Carrick built on this and extended their lead scoring a further three unanswered points, Toome found their range again and pulled two points back before the break, HT score Toome 0:04 – 1:05 Carrick. The second half seen a determined Toome as they came out with conviction and a bit of fire in the bellies. Scoring the first after the break only for Carrick to respond. Then through some great play from the back line through a fantastic ball played in to the free man Jason Murphy and it was only going in one place, the back of the net, making this a one-point game. It was nip and tuck then with James scoring to bring the sides level once again, Carrick answered only for Jason to respond, Carrick were coming strong now and their senior experience was showing through as they pulled two clear, William who was quiet by his standards scored an outrageous point to put one between them and Toomer were in this and giving it their all. Carrick were to score again and then James was brought down in front of goals for what was a clear penalty and he converted it with ease and put the home side a point in front, Toome had the chance to put this game to bed but the hop of the ball was just not favourable and the Carrick man was able to get enough of a tackle in on James to dispossess and stop what would have at least been a score if not a goal, Carrick were to make another burst and scored another from play to bring the sides level once more and it was a nail biting finish with the sides sharing the spoils. FT Score Toome 2:08 – 1:11 Carrickmacross. A fantastic team performance against a senior side who showed their skill and strength throughout the field and slightly unlucky not to have a home win. Well done to all the team and management. Scorers: James W – 1(pen):04(1F), Jason 1:01, Hugo, Liam McCooey and William 0:01. The team are out again on Friday 9th June at 8:00pm in an away fixture against Killanny, this will be a tough fixture and we will need the support of the Toome faiothful. Please be sure to spread the word and come along to show your support. #BeThe16thMan.

Reserve Championship: The Reserves played what could only be described as a game of two halves against Aghabog on Wednesday last 24th May in Aghabog. Toome played some great football scoring the opening six scores without reply from Hugo, Kevin and Liam McCooey. Aghabog clawed a couple of scores back only for young Sweeney to bury the ball in the back of the net and put the visitors ahead by seven, the home side scored another just before the break. HT Toome 1:06 – 0:03 Aghabog. The home side were having none of it and came out to score the first of two from play, then Tom (R) McMahon scored a great goal to bring the visitors back to a seven point lead, The McCooeys Liam and Stephen were to extend that to a ten point lead and this looked like a done deal with only 10 minutes of the second half played. A defensive error allowed the home side through and they punished the visitors with a well taken goal, they then won the breaking ball on the next two kickouts and scored a point and a goal to reduce it to just three. Nothing was going right for Toome now and through some sheer determination and fight the home side won the ball on the next 3 kickouts and capitalised bring the game back level from being ten down and we still had almost ten to play. Toome went ahead by another fine score from Liam Mc only for a mistaken pass in the misdde to allow Aghabog through and they went all the way to score another well taken goal and now find themselves two points ahead. The visitors showed some great strength and conviction to keep pressing and it was first Kevin then Liam McCooey to pull of two scores and secure a draw in what was an unbelievable game of ball. Fair play to the lads on not dropping their heads and fighting to the bitter end. FT Score 2:13 – 3:10 Aghabog. Next up is Doohamlet on Saturday evening at 5:00pm in St Victors Park, please be sure to spread the word and come along to show your support. #BeThe16thMan.
