Emyvale 2nd Half Performance Sends Them Through

AIB ULSTER CLUB JUNIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Emyvale (Monaghan) 2-15, Newtownstewart (Tyrone) 1-9.

A resurgent Emyvale booked their place in the semi-final of the Ulster club football Junior championship when they overcame the challenge of Tyrone champions, Newtownstewart in this entertaining contest that was to some extent adversely affected by the very slippery underfoot conditions in Clones on Sunday.

Newtownstewart got off to much the better start with Ryan Mayse causing the Emyvale defence all sorts of problems with his pace and tricky footwork as he registered three early points, one from a free, along with one from Brendan Boyle to put the Tyrone champions four in front after eight minutes.

Emyvale opened their account with a point from a free by Daniel McMahon but they were then rocked when Niall Mayse crashed in a goal to give his side a six points lead.

Emyvale improved substantially in the second quarter to outscore their opponents by six points to one, David McAlister with two, one from a ’45 and Daniel McMahon with the other four, three from frees, to leave just two between them at the break, Newtownstewart 1-6, Emyvale 0-7.

Emyvale were a transformed team in the second half and while Newtownstewart hit the first  point through Ryan Mayse they were to be increasingly on the back foot as Emyvale upped the tempo and when David McAlister hit the Tyrone net in the 4th minute the turnaround had started. Emyvale took the lead for the first time through Gareth McQuaid and they then reeled off an unanswered 1-5 between the 9th and 20th minutes, the goal a sublime finish by Ryan McAnespie, to put them in complete control. Newtownstewart did manager two late points but they were merely consolation scores as Emyvale closed it out with a 9th point from Daniel McMahon. Emyvale finished the game with 14 players following the dismissal of Paul McCarron on a red card in stoppage time.
