Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14

Wow, we really have been blessed with some cracking football over the last week with our under 16 footballers producing a cracking performance last Thursday and when our under 14 footballers travelled to play Corduff last Saturday 21st May they played their part in a truly great game of football where it ended all square. The game was played on a beautiful afternoon and was played at a very high tempo throughout with both sides attacking at every opportunity. Corduff started the brighter and scored a goal during the opening exchanges and perhaps should have had more scores registered but wasted a number of good scoring opportunities. It took us a while to settle down into the game but we eventually got up to speed and scores from James O’Brien (0-2), Timothy Elliot (0-1) and Gerry Larmer (0-1) put us in front by the narrowest of margins but at the half-time interval the scoreboard showed Corduff 1-1 Rockcorry 0-4. When these two sides meat there is always fireworks and the second half was played at a frantic pace with both sets of players giving it there all and it turned out to be a cracker. Midway through the second half it was level 1-3 to 0-6 with nice scores from Gerry Larmer (0-1) and Timothy Elliott (0-1). While we enjoyed a lot of possession we had a tendency to over-play the ball with a number of promising attacking breaking down but we did have a lucky break and Aaron Reilly found the back of the net to put us ahead leading 1-3 to 1-6. We looked to be on course to record a win but Corduff did not lay down and notched over a point and shortly after went ahead when they broke through our defence and finished with a lovely goal to regain a one point advantage, leading 2-4 to 1-6 at a vital stage of the match. You might have said that the game was all but lost but the lads showed great character and slotted over a last minute free-kick to leave the final score Corduff 2-4 Rockcorry 1-7. Their next outing in the league campaign is a home game against Doohamlet on Saturday 4th June and throw-in time is 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14 Championship

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16

Every now and then a game comes along that takes your breath away and last Thursday (19th May) the Under 16 contest against St. Tiarnach Sarsfields in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg League was just one of those standout games. By anyone’s standard’s this was an amazing match played at a very high tempo and was a great advertisement for our National games and all players, from both sides, deserve great credit for their performance because they displayed some remarkable skills and showed tremendous heart, effort and their work-rate was top notch. It was a thrilling encounter where both teams produced some impressive attacking football and at the half-time interval the scoreboard showed Rockcorry 0-6 St. Tiarnach Sarsfields 1-4. The pace of the game during the second half continued to remain fast pace, if not faster, and we nudged in front with scores from Pauric O’Brien to lead 1-7 to 1-6 midway through the period. At this stage of the game it was a battle of strength with thunderous shoulder to shoulder challenges going in across the pitch. St. Tiarnach Sarsfields continued to put together some nice attacking play and restored their one point advantage with two lovely points. Trailing by a single point and with very little time remaining the lads showed their metal as they battled back magnificently. Pauric O’Brien delivered a delightful chip over the defence to find Gerry Larmer who surged forward and as he raced down on goals and with the St. Tiarnach Sarsfields goalkeeper advancing he finished in style to secure a fully deserved victory on a score-line Rockcorry 2-7 St. Tiarnach Sarsfields 1-8. I have to say, this was a fantastic match and the lads certainly did the club proud. It was an excellent all round team performance as they all contributed towards the victory. Conor Clerkin produced some great saves, the defenders, Dara Dillon, Shane Greenan, Ryan Lynch and Ryan Carroll marshalled their opponents superbly, Caolan McPhillips and Pauric O’Brien worked effortlessly in midfield and the forwards Gerry Larmer, Ryan Cassidy, Aaron Smyth, Dylan McCollum and Lea McCollum all impressed with their movement. Well down lads a good result so keep up the good work. On Thursday 26th May they travel to Oram to play Clan na Gael and throw-in time is 7.30pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16 Championship

Please make a note in your diary because the under 16 footballers will play St. Tiarnach Sarsfields on Thursday 7th July in the Division 3 Championship.

Minor Football League Division 3

Our minor team were defeated by Latton last Tuesday 17th May, in the Minor Football League Division 3 campaign but I have to report that the team worked very hard and the final score-line does not truly reflect the effort and the work-rate displayed by the lads. The game was played in perfect conditions and the first half was evenly contested with both teams displaying some breath-taking football where the action was end to end stuff and after an exciting first thirty minutes we trailed by four points with the scoreboard showing Latton 1-9 Rockcorry 2-2. When play resumed the match continued at a fast pace and Latton enjoyed a mini purple patch where the floodgates opened and the concession of early goals proved decisive because midway through the second half they held a commanding advantage. The game was effectively over but the lads responded positively and there was no faulting the commitment from the team as they continued to battle on. During the closing stages of this highly entertaining encounter they fired over some impressive scores but unfortunately the final whistle sounded and Latton secured a comprehensive victory on a final score-line

Latton 8-13 to Rockcorry 4-4. It’s easy to play sport when you’re winning and I want to commend these young footballers and our coaches because while results have been disappointing they continue to show heart and they continue to put on the ‘Green & White’ jersey week after week to represent their club knowing that there’s a tough sixty minutes of hardship ahead! The result did not go our way but the lads throughout the hour showed courage and honest endeavour and while they enjoyed plenty of possession we were not able to convert it onto the scoreboard whereas Latton were a lot more economical in front of the posts. I know its tough lads and heart-breaking but keep those heads held high because at times you produced a lot of good football and worked extremely hard for each other. We are very proud of you and never stop trying because your day will come soon!
