Cumann Na Bunscoil. We had 3 local girls representing their National schools last week in the Cumann Na Bunscoil competition in Belfast, Aoibhinn Mc Cluskey was representing Carrickroe in the U11 girls singles and took home a Silver medal, the only game lost was her opening game against Tyrone, but Aoibhinn went on to win all her remaining games and by all accounts if Tyrone had have came last the result could have been different but never the less a brilliant achievement in her very first competitive outing, Fiona Flood was suppose to be partnered by her cousin Molly Flood but sickness ended Molly’s participation, so Aoibhinn was allowed to partner Fiona to fulfil the fixtures and they finished 3rd in the girls U11 doubles section, another brilliant result, Molly shouldn’t be too disappointed at only 9 years old she has many more years of competition ahead and be sure she will be a force to feared in time to come, Eythna Boyle represented Clara NS in the U13 girls singles, Eythna played 2 games, won one and lost one but unfortunately never got into the medals, well done to the girls and we hope that you all enjoyed the experience, a big thanks to Gene Flood and Marcella Boyle for travel with the girls on the day to Belfast, there is a presentation night in the Hill Grove Hotel Tuesday evening coming the 23rd for the girls so we hope all can attend.
Ulster Juvenile Championships. We have 10 juveniles togging out representing the county in the Ulster Championships on Sunday coming the 21st in Belfast, 4 boys and 6 girls, in the boys Padraig Treanor plays in the U13’s doubles in St.Pauls @ 4pm, Ryan Harnet plays in the U14 doubles in St.Pauls @ 11am, Ryan Boyle plays in the U15 singles in St.Pauls @ 6pm and Aaron Mohan in the U17 singles in “Rossa” @ 5pm, in the girls Emma Keenan plays in the U12 singles in Coláiste Féirste @ 1pm, in the U13 girls double Mia O Reilly & Clodagh Mc Meel team up together also in Coláiste Féirste @ 1pm, Tara Mc Meel plays in the U14 singles in Coláiste Féirste @ 8pm, Maebh Mc Cluskey plays in the U15 singles in Coláiste Féirste @ 3pm and Niamh Fullen in the U17 singles @ 4pm in Coláiste Féirste, some times are late but during play free slots may arise which will lead to an earlier game so be there well before the time, also take some food to keep the energy up, all competitors are asked to play in full “Monaghan” gear, good luck to all taking part and enjoy the day out, all finals the following weekend in Kingscourt.
Ulster Adult Championships. Good luck to John Treanor(T) as plays in the “Golden Masters “B” Singles” Ulster final on Saturday the 20th, there he plays Sean Mc Nally from Down, John defeated Gerry O Neill from Antrim in the semi’s 21-11, 21-10, John’s final is also penciled in for Coláiste Féirste so there will be a strong club representation there this weekend, good luck John and hope you return with the silverware.
Mono League. The Mono League is still on going, we will have both courts running hopefully from here forward, the seating may not be finished but it should be safe enough for the players, some players are “not” fulfilling their fixtures but a bigger issue is that their opponents are not been contacted, this can not be tolerated, can captains please put pressure on all players to please fulfill fixtures on the night, and if not before the next game.
Colleges Handball. Hard luck to Dermot Boyle and Gary Mc Kenna(D) as they lost the All Ireland Colleges Semi-final in Kingscourt Saturday past, there they played Mark Rice & Mickey Kelly from Claremorris Mayo, having lost the first game 15-6 they boys fought back to win the second 12-15 but lost the tie-breaker 15-4, hard luck boys but a good achievement reaching the All Ireland Semi’s.
Adult County Single Championships. Some of our club men are still in contention for county silverware, good luck all remaining participants.
Table Quiz. We will be holding our annual table quiz on Friday night March the 4th in St.Mellans @ 9pm with all proceeds being donated to Gaeil Triucha for the further refurbishing of the viewing area at the glass alley, all support will be very much appreciated.
Viewing Area. As all can see we are progressing well with the viewing area, the concentration turned to the back of the seated area as to get the shop fully functional again, another few weeks should complete the project, we thank all patrons who are giving up all their time and tools free of charge, this all is a massive saving to the club.
