Clones Notes

July 14th, 2015

The very best of luck to Fintan Kelly and the Monaghan Seniors in the Ulster Final on Sunday against the familiar enemy Donegal.  This is a very difficult proposition, this is the third year in a row that the teams have met in the final.  No one will ever forget the scenes in St.Tiarnachs Park and Clones when they won in 2013 and a repeat of that would be fantastic.

This is the biggest weekend of the year for the club with the Ulster Final on this Sunday.  There’s a huge buzz and a massive sense of anticipation and excitement.  As the week progresses the town will see many of its sons and daughters returning for the occasion and we welcome them warmly along with all visitors to Clones this weekend.

There’s been a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes with many volunteers giving of their free time.  There was a large turnout at the ‘Big Clean Up’ on Saturday with lots of cleaning, shining and polishing going on.  Kevin, Phelim, Tommy and Val have been busy all week putting the finishing touches to the field and its environs, putting up flags and making sure everything is perfect on the day.

Seniors:  Clones Intermediate team collected two league points on Sunday afternoon following victory over Emyvale in The Peace Link. The visitors were seeking a win to consolidate their position at the top of the league while Clones needed points to give their survival chances a boost. The game itself was low-scoring with chances missed by both sides. Thankfully, Clones did enough to be ahead at the final whistle on a score line of 1-06 to 0-08. We’ve had a few close calls in recent weeks and were delighted to get this timely boost ahead of our next league match which is fixed for 5th August, away to Tyholland.

Minors played Aughnamullen in the Championship on Tuesday, following a disappointing league Adi and the lads will be trying their best as always. Match report next week.

U16s won their Championship Game against Latton last Thursday in a very close and exciting game. They play Doohamlet in the League this Thursday in the Peace Link at 7.30pm.

U14s play away to Corduff next Tuesday at 8pm.

U12s had a great win over Truagh on Saturday in a high scoring game in Clones. They play Latton away next Wednesday at 6.30pm.

U8s and 10s took part in a Blitz in Scotstown on Saturday. Some great football was played and lots of talent coming through.

115 Children took part to part in the GAA Cul Camp in Clones this year in great weather conditions. These were the best numbers in Clones for a long time. A great time was had by all and it’d do your heart good to see all the little boys and girls out on St. Tiarnachs Park.

Congratulations to Senior team Bainisteoir Micheal Slowey and Cheryl who tie the note this weekend.  The very best of luck to you both and as the old saying goes ‘May you both live as long as you want and never want as long as you live’.
