Rockcorry Notes

June 24th, 2015

Well Done MonaghanWell done to the Monaghan senior footballers who booked their place in the Ulster Final of the Ulster Senior Football Championship courtesy of 1-20 to 0-13 victory over Fermanagh last Sunday. They now progress to the Ulster final where they await the winners of the Derry v Donegal clash and no doubt it will prove another exciting encounter. Well done lads and keep up the good work.

Universal Graphics Junior Football Championship

All roads lead to Smithborough this Friday evening (26th June) when our senior footballers will get their first taste of championship action as they take on Scotstown in the first round of the Universal Graphics junior football championship competition. This promises to be an exciting encounter so please make the short trip and come out and show your support for the lads in this huge game. It all gets underway at 8.15pm and on behalf of the club I would like to wish the team management (Mickey, Jimmy & Pascal) and all the lads the very best and to say give it your best shot and leave nothing behind in terms of passion and commitment.

On Wednesday 15th July they travel to play Donaghmoyne at 8pm.

Go Games Fixtures

The next outing for the under 8 and under 10 footballers will be on Thursday 25th June when they both take part in a Double Blitz which takes place at Doohamlet between 7pm to 9pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12 League

Our under 12 footballers were once again very unlucky not to come away with at least a share of the spoils when they played Ballybay, last Saturday 20th June, in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league campaign. It was tit for tat for most parts of this highly enjoyable encounter where all players (both sides) displayed marvellous effort and commitment. We had a great start and the boys and girls really put on a collective performance and at the interval we held a 3-2 to 2-2 advantage, All players gave it everything during the second half but Ballybay responded and moved ahead midway through the second period to lead 3-3 to 4-4. The team continued to work hard and it paid off with another well taken goal but with only a couple of minutes remaining time ran out and we lost out by the narrowest of margins on a final score-line Rockcorry 4-3 Ballybay 4-4. Please visit our Facebook or our Flickr page to view a selection of action photographs. They are back in action this Saturday 27th June when they travel to play Monaghan Harps and the game has a throw-in time of 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14 League

Our under 14 footballers will be back in action on Thursday 25th June when they travel to play Inniskeen at 7.30pm. On Saturday 18th July they have a home game against Latton at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16

The next game in the league campaign is scheduled for Thursday 2nd July when they host Toome at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7.30pm. On Thursday 16th July they travel to play Tyholland at 7.30pm.

Minor Football League Division 3 Shield

With all the examinations over for another year the minor footballers are back in action on Tuesday 7th July when they host Doohamlet at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7.30pm and on Tuesday 21st July they travel to play Emerald Sarsfields at 7.30pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg Under 16 Championship

The under 16 footballers will get their first taste of championship action on Thursday 9th July when they travel to play Toome and the game has a throw-in time of 7.30pm.

Charity Tea / Coffee Afternoon

I think it’s fantastic when members of the community come together to help and support a worthy cause. This was certainly the case when I called into the Rockcorry National School last Saturday afternoon where Elaine Tate, her family and friends organised a Tea/Coffee afternoon with all proceeds going towards the Cootehill Community Cancer Support Group and Crocus Monaghan. It was an amazing sight with a wonderful selection of tempting cakes, luxurious cup-cakes, buns and plenty of other yummy treats on show and it really was a case of Cake Overload. I was only there for a short while but I said to myself – you know what Michael, you were up at sun-rise, you have worked hard today so why not indulge yourself…and I did just that with a tasty slice of black forest gateau which went down a treat! There was a lovely atmosphere in a great facility and it was a fantastic and enjoyable day and in many ways it was quite simply ‘Caketacular’. Fairplay to Elaine who organised the event for the two charities and well done to everyone who supported, baked and helped out in any way. You can all feel very proud of yourselves for hosting a great afternoon and the money raised is a testament to all your hard work to raise money for two great causes.

Charity Sky Dive

I’m not a lover of heights and to be blatantly honest I don’t feel the need to conquer my fear on this particular issue. You could say I love the ground under my feet and while I do have a small bucket list nothing on this earth or will ever, ever be able to persuade me to do a sky jump. The idea of jumping out of plane at 10,000 feet with nothing more than some rope and a bit of plastic acting as your parachute to control your decent is crazy, right? That is why I have the utmost respect and admiration for anyone who takes on this daring adventure all in the name of charity because local man, Mossy Brady, will be doing just that during July to raise money for Down Syndrome Ireland. Mossy is currently collecting sponsorship and I’m sure he would welcome any level of sponsorship that you are able to provide. If you see a sponsored card in any of the shops or pubs please support his campaign by making a donation towards a worthy charity. No matter how big or small your donation every little helps and it will make a difference.
