Toome Notes

April 29th, 2015

Draw: Momentum is gathering for our Fundraising Draw on June Bank Holiday Weekend! Many thanks to the Juvenile Parents who have taken tickets to sell. Any club member who can sell a few tickets, no matter how many, please contact any committee member. It takes a lot of time, effort and money to run a club and any help that you can give us would be greatly appreciated.

Lotto: The lotto is back with a bang after a brief hiatus! The next draw will take place on Monday week. Any young player who wishes to sell a few lotto tickets will make some pocket money for themselves in the process – this could turn into a nice little earner over the summer months ahead. Contact Dermot Reavy or your coaches for further details.

Go Games: The Go Games are coming into Blitz Season, and the youngsters are training away every Friday evening from 6:30pm to 7:30pm (under 6 – under 10). New members are always welcome!

Toome ‘Meet & Walk’ – The newly launched Toome Meet & Walk group launched their 9 week challenge last Monday morning (27th) at 7am and continue every Monday, Wednesday & Friday. There has been a brilliant turnout so far. They will walk for 30 minutes, 3 mornings a week, making the most of the bright mornings. It’s a group for ‘the tortoise, the hare and the cheetah’, everyone is welcome, whether you’re crawling, walking or sprinting! Contact Margaret 087-7591240 or Anne 087-2470457.

Congratulations: Congratulations to Pj and Louise Kelly on the birth of twin girls Courtney and Chloe – Blessed is PJ amongst women! Congratulations also to Amanda Casey and Pete on the birth of baby Ted, and her sister Ciara and Colin on the birth of baby Rebecca. Uncle Keith is busy getting ready for babysitting duty!

Senior Team: It was the proverbial week of mixed fortunes for the red army. We travelled to Oram with our backs were very much to the wall going into this game and a massive response was required. The game started in a predictably tight and tense fashion, a point by Shane and a free from Gavin left us 3-2 behind, before a high catch and turn left Gavin one on one with the keeper and the big man buried it to the back of the net.

Buoyed by the good start, Toome pressed on and a powerful finish from Cormac’s left boot saw the green flag raised again. We continued to attack, and Liam finished off a brilliant team move with a close range aerial finish to make it 3-2 to 0-4. Incredibly, Gary Wilson then scored a fourth goal, this time from the spot, to leave it HT: Oram 0-5 Toome 4-5.

As expected, Oram raised their game in the second half and our cause wasn’t helped when Francis Quinn saw red, somewhat harshly. We didn’t let the heads drop, and brilliant defending coupled with hard work going forward kept a resurgent Oram at bay, with brilliant scores from Shane and Gary easing the pressure. It would be unfair to single out any players, but Mark McMahon and Conan McGovern did particularly well in their first starts in the JFL, while young Hugo Connolly marshalled his defence well to earn a deserved clean sheet. Full Time: Oram 0-12 Toome 4-9.

Foireann: Hugo Connolly; Darragh McKenna, Jason Murphy, Mark McMahon; Matthew O’Reilly, Keith Casey, Daniel Friskey; Stephen McCooey, Francis Quinn; Shane Moore, Cormac Quinn, Liam McCooey; Gary Wilson, Gavin Flanagan, Conan McGovern; Fír Ionaid: Eoghan Donaghy, Ciaran McKenna, Mark Connolly.

Unfortunately, Friday evening away to Éire Óg brought defeat with a very depleted panel. It’s onwards and upwards now for the visit of Aghabog next Sunday at 3:30pmin St Victor’s Park.
Minors: Well done to the minors who won both their games this week. We hosted a strong Cremartin side on Saturday, winning by 2-10 to 0-11 in the end. On Tuesday evening we travelled to Clones and came away with an 8 point victory, 1-18 to 1-10. We host Emyvale on Tuesday evening at 7:30pm and we hope to keep our good run going.

Under 16s: We welcomed a strong Patrick Emmets side to Toome last Thursday evening, losing out by 3 points after a thrilling game. Again, there was plenty of cause for optimism, with players trying new positions and the team continues to improve. Get well soon to Matthew Carolan, who suffered an ankle injury recently. We host Seans in Toome on Thursday at 7pm

Under 14s: Our next game is at home v Truagh on Saturday 9th May at 12pm

Under 12s: The youngsters are busy getting ready for Saturday’s Spring League final against Clones in Cloghan at 1pm, best of luck lads!

Happy Birthday: To Peter Donaghy, who turned 21 this week. While farming is his first love, he enjoys an odd runout with the B team!
