Sympathy:
Sadly another link to the past was extinguished on Saturday morning last when Canon Tom Breen was called to his eternal reward. As a young curate in Clara in the mid ’50’s the then Fr Tom set about establishing a Parish team in Errigal Truagh. For decades before there had been several start up teams in different area’s of the parish, namely Carrickroe, Clara, Mullan Mill and of course the Bragan Erin Hopes pre-dated them all fielding in the early part of the previous century. Ultimately all folded up in time with possibly Carrickroe and Mullan Mill the only semblance of team’s in existence at the time. Fr Tom organised a meeting of interested parties deep in the winter of 1957 in Clara Hall, from which a short time later, emerged the present club Truagh Gaels GFC or now known as Gaeil Triucha CLG. The club affiliated in 1958 and played their first game against neighbours Scotstown. Fr Tom took his place at full forward on the day helping the Gaels to a one point victory on their maiden voyage. This was the first all parish team. He also served as the first chairman of the club in ’58 & ’59, returning in ’63 for a further year in the chair. His part in the formative years of the emerging club is there for all to see and his term involved only came to an end when his clerical duties meant that he was needed in another parish. No doubt he was a heavy loss for the club to carry at that time however he maintained a strong interest in the club over the years. A short number of years ago he returned to a presentation night in St Mellans where he presented to the club a trophy to be presented annually as a way of inducting club members into the Hall Of Fame. The trophy bears his name. His contribution will not be forgotten in parish and sporting life in Errigal Truagh as long as there is a ball kicked in St Mellans. His funeral took place in Dromore, Co Tyrone on Tuesday morning. Club members formed a guard of honour in respect of his commitment to Truagh Gaels. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam.
