Rockcorry Notes

February 17th, 2015

Wedded Bliss
On behalf of everyone at the Rockcorry GAA club and indeed the community I would like to take this opportunity to extend our best wishes to senior team footballer Cathal Sheridan who is getting married this weekend to his fiancée Amy Dinkin. I’m sure it will be a great weekend for both of your families and we hope you both have a lovely day and we wish you a lifetime of the greatest joy, love and happiness together and the very best of luck to both of you.

Reserve Team Selectors
I am delighted to announce that our reserve team manager, Sean Rooney, has named Kieran McCormill and Gregory Calvert as his team selectors for the year. Kieran was an outstanding club player and will be regarded as one of the best players ever to wear the ‘Green & White’ jersey. He always played with passion, pride, gusto and vigour and had the ability to read a game and was always tenacious and competent in his tackling. His attitude to training and every game made him a solid and reliable defender most notably wearing the number six jersey. His finest hour was captaining the team in 1996 when we captured the Dr. Ward Cup and given his tough, no-nonsense and determined approach his presence along the side-line will only drive the team onwards and upwards. Gregory represented the club at numerous levels and was noted for his cuteness and craftiness. A player with unlimited skill he normally played his football in the forward line where his composure and ball control knew no bounds. A lovely striker of the ball with left or right he had excellent vision and the intelligence and alertness to react to any situation. Sadly, due to a number of serious injuries his playing career was cut short but he still shows great energy and enthusiasm for the game. Both men have a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game and while they have to be officially rubber-stamped and ratified at our next management committee meeting I certainly look forward to working with Sean, Kieran & Gregory in their endeavours to help drive and push our reserve players to achieve their own piece of unique silverware. Good luck everyone.

Annual Mass
Just a reminder that the annual Mass for the deceased members and friends of our club will be celebrated this Sunday 22nd February at St. Mary’s Chapel, Corravacan at 11am. Anyone who has suffered a bereavement among family or friends in the last year is especially welcome to attend. If you are unable to attend and would like to have a name included in the Mass please contact myself and I will be pleased to facilitate you.

Social Night & Annual Presentations
One of the highlights of the year is always our annual social & presentation night and the committee are currently finalising plans to
hold the event in the near future. This is always a very enjoyable occasion and this year’s social night will once again be something special as it brings us all together to honour the latest inductee into our Hall of Fame and the night will also include presentations to the senior and reserve players of the year. So folks, make sure you don’t miss out on this enjoyable occasion and watch this space for details and join us for an exciting and fun night.

Parish Concert
Rehearsals are now in full flow with a lot of the acts practicing their routines for the upcoming Parish Variety Concert which will take place on Friday 15th March in St. Mary’s Hall. Last year’s event turned out to be wildly successful and undoubtedly was an incredible night’s entertainment and we can all look forward to loads more of talent and colourful characters ranging from individual solo singers, ballad groups, dancers, musicians, actors, comedians putting on an amazing show. The concert is open to everyone and anyone who is willing to take part in the concert so please get in touch with Briege Brannigan or Thomas McCormick and they will point you in the right direction. We want to put on a memorable and spectacular show that we can all be proud of so please do not let the Parish down and come out and support it.

Reserve League Structure
The reserve football league structures for 2015 were recently published and division 2 will be tiered into 2A and 2B containing six teams in each division. We have been placed in Division 2A with Donaghmoyne, Doohamlet, Drumhowan, Sean McDeermotts & Eire Og. Each division will be played as a double league basis (home and away) and for each division, the top team will advance to the final, with the second and third placed team advancing to a play off for the final. The winner of each league final will gain promotion. The bottom team in each division will be relegated. There will be 3 reserve championships. Division 1A & 1B will enter the O’Duffy Cup, Division 2A & 2B will enter the Crawley Cup, while Division 3 sides will compete in the McKeown Cup. Each competition is run on a straight knock out (preliminary round, quarter final, semi-final and final).

Minor Football League Division 3 (13 a side)
The minor football structures were recently published and the old saying “the least said, is easiest mended” is very appropriate hear and probably good advice, so I will move on swiftly!!! For the record, we have been placed in Division 3 which comprises 8 teams and is to be played as a single league. Standings after the first seven rounds will then be used to split the league into 2 sections, with the top 4 teams competing in Div. 3A and the bottom 4 teams competing in Div. 3B (shield). Teams will then play each other in a single league with the top 2 teams advancing to the respective league finals. The division 3 championship is comprised of 8 teams, which will be played on a knock out basis with an open draw, with quarter finals, semi-finals and final. The teams are Killanny, Doohamlet, Emerald Sarsfields (Blackhill & Oram), Patrick Emmets (Aghabog & Currin), Latton, Tyholland, Castleblayney and the competition is scheduled to commence on Tuesday 31st March.
