Truagh Notes

September 16th, 2014

Final Action: Our senior hurlers play in the senior hurling league final against Castleblayney this Sunday at 1pm in Monaghan. All support appreciated.

Seniors: In a high scoring game, our seniors fell to Ballybay in the replay of the SFC rd 3B and subsequently exited the championship last Sunday in Clones, 3-9 to 2-15. Ballybay were stronger out of the blocks and were 1-2 to 0-0 up before we opened our account in the 8th minute with a Daniel McKenna free. We quickly followed up with a well taken goal by Daniel to narrow the deficit to a point. Ballybay remained in front until we hit a purple patch, registering 5 of the 6 points scored in the last 10 minutes of the half to put us in front for the first time in the match, 1-7 to 1-6 at half time. We underperformed in the second half and after 24 minutes we had only scored a point (42’) against Ballybay’s 1-7 in the same period, leaving us 1-8 to 2-14 behind. A kamikaze 3 minute spell between the 55th-58th minute turned the game on its head in which goals from Chrissy McKenna and Mark Counihan and a point from Niall Rooney reduced the margin to just a point. However, we could not maintain the momentum succumbing to 2 late frees to lose out in the end, Gaeil Triucha 3-9 Ballybay 2-15. Our team and scorers were: Ian Treanor; John McCarron, Niall Feely, Niall McQuillan; Aidan Coyle, Rory Treanor, Paudie McKenna (0-2); Pauric Treanor, Niall McMeel; Niall Rooney (0-1), Niall Coyle, John Treanor (0-1); Chrissy McKenna 1-2, Daniel McKenna (1-3f), Adam Treanor. Subs Used: Mark Counihan (1-0) for Adam Treanor (22mins), Chrissy McAnanley for Niall McMeel (35mins), Barry Cuddy for (52mins), Darren Todd for Niall McQuillan (54mins) & Shane Treanor for Darren Todd (59mins-blackcard).

After the highs of championship football experienced by the club over the last year, it was a sense of disappointed to exit the championship. Hopefully we can build on the experience and return stronger. We now revert to league action, with a home match against Castleblayney this Saturday, 20th September, at 3pm. We then play away to Currin under lights next Wednesday 24th September at 8pm.
