Seniors: After an epic 80 minutes we couldn’t be separated with Ballybay in round 3B of the senior championship on Saturday evening last in Clontibret, finishing with a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-18. Ballybay opened the scoring in the 4th minute to go a point ahead but took a further 8 minutes later to register their second point. In the interim, we scored 1-4, including a 10th minute converted penalty goal from Daniel McKenna in which the Ballybay goalkeeper was fortunate to avoid a black card. Ballybay reduced the margin to a goal by the 20th minute before we added 2 points in the remaining period to finish half time GaeilTriucha 1-6 Ballybay 0-4. Ballybayclosed this gap to 2 points by the 34th minute with 3 successive points before Niall Coyle touched in our second goal in the 35th minute. By the 43rd minute we werethe 2 goals in front, 2-8 to 0-8 after a fine Chrissy McKenna point. It was at this stage that the opposition raised their performance, scoring 4 points in the next 7 minutes before a 54th minute goal put them in front for only the second time in the match. We responded with an equaliser a minute later from Chrissy McKenna. Ballybay retook the lead in the 57th minute. A resilient Truaghside yet again responded with 2 points, both from Daniel McKenna, to swing the lead in our favour deep into injury time. However, with the last play of the game, Ballybay registered a point to level, 2-11 to 1-14, bringing the game into extra time. The extra time period proved to be as compelling as the original 60 minutes. Prior to receiving the game’s only black card, Chrissy McKenna opened the scoring in this period. Daniel McKenna’s point sandwiching Ballybay’s two points to leave the extra time half time score, GaeilTriucha 2-13 Ballybay 1-16. The second half of extra time also saw 4 points shared between the sides, which included a last minute 47m free from Paudie McKenna to force the fixture to a replay. 40 Years Celebrations. St.Mellans Handball Club will be celebrating a major milestone in 2014 as we ring in the clubs 40th year in existence, the committee are currently hard at work organising a gala night to celebrate the occasion, we will be publishing a booklet for the event and hope to have a launch night for it in the not too distance future, if anyone inside or even outside the club have any old photo’s or memorabilia from the past 40 years we would very grateful for all the help.

Back in Action. Unfortunately as the nights become longer and as the summer comes to a close the attention begins to switch from the green grass to the indoors of the alley, as that time of year again approaches we are encouraging all players to get back into the swing of things before all events kick off, we would ask parents to try and get juveniles back down as we hope to get juvenile events up and running earlier this year to run alongside the re-opening of the schools, so keep an eye out for notes of all on-goings but be down practicing in the meantime.

AGM. The club will be holding the AGM next month and we would like to ask people of the area to consider coming on board this term to help out, as the club grows steadily bigger each year the amount of organising events leagues etc also increases, so as the old saying goes “many hands make light work”.
