Senior Football

We began our S.F.L. Division One campaign on Sunday last when we travelled to Inniskeen to play Magheracloone. Having twice beaten the Mitchell’s two years ago this was never going to be an easy opening fixture. We started brightly and dominated the play but couldn’t convert our possession into scores. Magheracloone opened the scoring with a Tommy Freeman free. Jack Mc Carron equalised on the 11th minute after Niall Mc Entee had seen his shot come off the crossbar with the goalie well beaten. A cracking goal by the dominant Dick Clerkin and three unanswered points, from Jack Mc Carron , Niall Mc Entee and Philip O Callaghan, saw Currin lead by 1-4 to 0-1 after 23 minutes. A Tommy Freeman free followed by an against the run of play  James Ward goal in the twenty ninth minute left two points between the teams at half time, 1-4 to 1-2. The second half saw the home side score four points in the first ten minutes to go into a lead that they never relinquished. Currin were reduced to fourteen men when Ben Clerkin was ‘black carded’ after a yellow, and when Enda Mc Caffrey was also ‘blackcarded’ we had a mountain to climb. With Tommy Freeman now coming into the game having been well marshalled throughout by the excellent Sean Brady, Magheracloone ran out winners on a score line of 2-11 to 1-9. Currin with our small panel will find it difficult in this division but the ‘black cards’ and their interpretation certainly merits mention.  We in Monaghan are well aware that the catalyst for the introduction of the ‘black card’ was that ‘Sean Cavanagh’ tackle, that all Monaghan supporters will never forget. Yet during this game everyone  present could not believe how an exact replica of this  ‘Sean Cavanagh’ tackle went virtually unpunished, at a very crucial time. Allied to this Currin ended up with two players off for inoccuous fouls which occured out the field. However on a positive not,a special mention must go to Ronan King who made his senior football debut and no doubt this will not be his last in the blue and gold.  Team and scorers:- Fergal Connolly, Dara Brady, Sean Brady, Cian North, Ben Clerkin, Conor Mac Caffrey, Michael Quigley, Dick Clerkin, 1-1, Paddy Mc Dermott, Enda Mac Caffrey, Jack Mac Carron, 0-6,4f, Ciaran Mac Caffrey, Niall Mac Entee, 0-1, Philip O Callaghan, 0-1f, Francis O Callaghan. Subs used, Ronan King for Enda Mc Caffrey (black card.)

Inter County

It’s back to NFL action on Sunday next with Laois the visitors to Clones. Please note that the throw in for this game is at 2.00 p.m. This is to facilitate the hurlers. In the Ladies, Monaghan continued their strong showing with an emphatic win over Donegal last weekend. Ellen and Laura are now back in the reckoning after injury and will hopefully play a prominent role in the playoffs.
