Congratulations
Congratulations to Paul Mc Ardle who started in the All Ireland semi-final against Mayo. Paul slotted in at full back and had a steady performance over the year with Monaghan minors leading to his start in the Semi final. Heres hoping Pauls got more to give for Magheracloone to finish a good year for him. Congratulations to Michael Metzger who was also part the Monaghan Minor squad.
Senior Football League
Wednesday 21st Castleblayney were the visitors to Iniskeen where Magheracloone ran out 2-12 to 0-16 winners. On Saturday last we made the short trip to Carrickmacross in search of two more points to strengthen our position near the top of the table. This was a typical local darby. At half time the Mitchells went to the dressing room 1 point down after playing very poor football. We played a lot better in the second half but were guilty of poor sorting missing a penalty and two other good goal chances, we also kicked a total of ten wides in the second half alone but we hung on and finished Magheracloone 2-8 Carrickmacross 0-12. Magheracloone now sit 2nd in the league on 20pts with 4 games remaining. We are poised to secure a Semi-Final spot but there is still some work to be done to secure 2nd or 3rd in the league table.
Senior Championship
Saturday 31st Aug Magheracloone v Castleblayney in the back door of the Senior Football Championship. Venue: Iniskeen @ 8:00pm This is last chance saloon for this team and defeat will leave only the Senior League to play for while a win could see them within touching distance of a Semi-Final. Please come and show your support to these players who are confident that Magheracloone will still have a big say as to the final destination of the Mick Duffy Cup for 2013.
Pitch Development
The good weather allowed progress to proceed at a better rate than expected and prunty has now put in the main drains around the entire field, installed 4 pre-cast man holes at the 4 corners of the field and installed 80mm plastic drains at 7m centres. He has now put back the top soil at a depth of approx 9 inches and regraded falls to approx 1200mm from top to bottom. See photos at www.magheracloonemitchells.ie/photo/
The next step is to improve the structure of the topsoil by adding grit which may involve ploughing the topsoil after grit is spread. After that surface drains or trench as they are better known will be installed at 800mm centres from the top of the field to the bottom which will dissect the 7m centre drains. Check out the Clubs Website or Facebook page for news on how the development is progressing.
Charity Cycle
The 150 kilometre Charity Cycle will be held on Saturday September 14th. It is in aid of Magheracloone Care of the Aged and the GAA club’s pitch development. Anyone interested in taking part or helping in any way is asked to contact Thomas McDermott at 0872251476 or Leo himself at 0872846996. Sponsorship cards have now been issued to the various cyclists and the two local groups hope that you will be generous in supporting these two causes. When the cyclists return to the Community Centre, the club hope to have a crowd of well wishers present to welcome them back to base. There will be four Ulster Cups (2013 Senior & Minor Mens & Ladies winning cups) on display for both young and old to get their photo taken with if they wish. Music is provided by “The Great Pretenders”. There will be a BBQ and a bar for everyones enjoyment and all are invited. Admission is free and a long night is definitely on the cards.
Good Wishes to Fr. Dufffy
The club wishes to congratulate and welcome Fr Larry Duffy as Monsignor and Parish Priest of Carrickmacross. A native of Drumbrone Magheracloone, Fr Larry was a prominent member of the Mitchell’s in the early seventies. He was a leading member of the team that won the Junior B Championship in 1973 and the Brennan Cup in 1974. We wish him every success in Carrickmacross. The club also wish to be associated with the good wishes to Monsignor Vincent Connolly on his retirement. Fr. Connolly is also an ardent supporter of the GAA.
Sympathy
The chairman and members of the club wish to extend sympathy to the relatives of the late Rosie Ward Mokeern, who passed away recently. May she rest in peace.
