County Champions 2013

It has a great ring to it.

Inniskeen took on Blayney last Saturday night in what was a re-run of 2012’s County hurling championship final.

Blayney went in to the game confident on the back of last year’s win along with the defeat they inflicted on Inniskeen early on in the Championship group stage.

The first half was a cagey affair with both teams feeling each other out and afraid to go after it. Inniskeen won the toss and decided to play towards the dressing room in Clontibret.

The half see sawed between the 2 teams as they went into the break with Blayney leading by a point with a score line of 0-05 to 0-04.

All of the above 1st half points for Inniskeen came from the Captain Ronan Meegan and Martin Murphy.

The second half got off to the worst possible start as Blayney scored the only goal of the game courtesy of Gerry Brady.

The Goal was slightly fortuitous as Gerry Ruddy on another day would have dealt with it comfortably, but championship finals will do that to anyone.

However the lads kept their heads and composure and responded with 2 points in quick succession from Ronan and Kevin Crawley to bring it to a one point game after 48 mins.

Blayney though just seemed to tag on a point here and there to keep the lads out of reach, Tony Forde’s one brought it back to 2 in it straight away.

Inniskeen kept coming and coming and by the 55th Minute they were all square again at 1-07 to 0-10, both Points coming from Captain fantastic Ronan Meegan, the latter was a huge free from the sideline underneath the stand.

Blayney showed why they are champions and responded with 2 scores in quick response to Meegans points. The game looked dead and buried at this point with 3 minutes to go and 2 points in it.

But Ronan tagged on another point to bring it to within 1 point with one minute to go and then slotted the equalizer on the verge of full time to set up a grand stand finish and a grand stand finish it was.

The vocal crowd was at the edge of their seats in time added on as both teams scrambled frantically to secure possession at midfield.

It was Trevor Hillard who came out on top, the 2012 all star managed to get the ball through to Seamus Shevlin who showed brilliant initiative, instead of pulling on the ball and running the risk of been hooked Shevlin kicked it though to Doni Meegan.

Doni got chopped down under the eyes of Referee Jason McAndrew and McAndrew had no hesitation of awarding the free to Inniskeen.

Up stepped the captain yet again and with nerves of steel drilled the ball home to give Inniskeen a one point lead which was surely the last action of the game!!

Mc Andrew waved for one more play as Blayney pucked out, won possession and launched a huge ball down towards the Inniskeen Goal.

However our Goal Keeper, County star Gerry Ruddy came fearlessly from his line and fielded the ball and drove it back down the field with an 80 yard puck and with that the final whistle sounded as the Lads fell to feet with exhaustion.

For only the second time Inniskeen and Captain Ronan Meegan brought the Mick Quigley cup back to the Fane side.

The game ended Inniskeen 0-13 Castleblaney 1-09, and special mention has to go to man of the Match Ronan Meegan who contributed 11 of the 13 points.

On behalf of all the Committee and Members I would like to congratulate Manager Brian Brady, his back room team of Martin Murphy, Oisin Loftus along with capt Ronan Meegan and the rest of the lads who done us proud.

I’m sure after they get this out of their systems they will push on and target the double and an Ulster title.

Well done lads.

Team and Scores: G Ruddy; Colm Meegan, P Dowdall, P Garland; P Meegan, P Brooks, S Loftus; T Hilliard, K Crawley (0-1); PJ Boyle, R Meegan (Capt., 0-11, 10f), M Murphy (0-1); J Dooley, D McGahon, D Meegan.

Well Done Padraig McGahon

Who represented Inniskeen at half time in the Monaghan Vrs Tyrone match recently held in Croke Park. To Round it off Padraig scored a cracker of a long range goal in the game. Well done, there’s not many can say they ran out and played in Croke park.

Congratulations to the Senior Hurlers on their Championship success and hopefully this will encourage the next generation of hurlers as the team members take it in turns to coach the juveniles on Saturday mornings.
