Doohamlet GFC Notes
Senior League: Doohamlet 0-13 Blayney Faughs 1-10
The large crowd who attended this local derby between Doohamlet and Blayney certainly got full value for their admission fee as both sides served up a thrilling contest in this Senior league clash.
Played on an excellent surface at O’Neill Park in ideal conditions this was a feisty affair which produced 10 yellow cards and 2 red as both sides fought for every ball and score.
Blayney raced into a 2 point lead with points from Benny McElroy and Mark Hanratty before Ollie Hughes opened the home sides account with a fine left footed point from the right wing. Shane McManus levelled the scores with another long distance effort. Paul McArdle and Ciaran Hanratty traded scores to level again at 0-03 each as play flowed from end to end. Marty McElroy edged Blayney ahead again from a 20 metre free and this was cancelled out with another placed ball from Paul McArdle to see both sides go in at the break all square at 0-04 each.
If the intensity and commitment was fierce in the first half it went up another notch in the second as both sides refused to yield an inch. Damien Hughes opened the second half scoring with a fine point from play before Paul McArdle scored from another free. Ciaran Hanratty curled over another excellent point with his left foot but again the home side responded with Barry McGinn tapping over a close in free. The game was red hot at this stage and the referee was struggling to contain a number of flash points. Doohamlet were playing some brilliant football as we entered the final quarter and the Blayney defence were struggling to cope. After an excellent move involving Ciaran McManus, Mark Murphy and Kevin McArdle the final pass found Colin Walshe who bored down on goal only for Ciaran Hughes to crudely take him down and pick up his second yellow and an early shower. Doohamlet were now rampant and with their numerical advantage were cutting through the Blayney defence. Points from Colin Walshe, Mark Murphy, and Ollie Hughes gave the home side a three point advantage. Ciaran Han ratty again punished a defensive lapse with another point before Blayney were given a life line when Dermot Malone was upended and a penalty awarded. Malone himself took the spot kick and after his initial shot was saved by James Casey he followed up the rebound to slot home and give his side a one point advantage with ten minutes remaining. However Doohamlet refused to admit defeat and Paul McArdle kicked three excellent long range scores to see the home side regain the lead. Ollie Hughes then picked up a second yellow card as Marty McElroy reduced the deficit to the minimum from another free. Blayney threw everything into attack in search of the equalizer. They were rewarded when Marty McElroy swung over another excellent score on the stroke of full time to draw level and both sides deservedly shared the points after a thoroughly entertaining contest.
