ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

21st May 2013

Drumlin Credit Unions SFL

Due to the unpleasant weather and the poor field conditions of Pairc Naomh Mhuire our home game against Ballybay, last Sunday 19th May, in the Drumlin Credit Union senior football league campaign was switched to their grounds. Unfortunately, there was a touch of Déjà vu because once again two goals conceded within the first five minutes proved vital and we’re back to the old cliché again with the well-worn line that ‘goals win games’ as Ballybay secured a comfortable victory on a final score-line Ballybay 3-15 Rockcorry 1-12. A full match report and a selection of action shots can be viewed on www.rockcorrygaa.ie

Speedy Recovery

When Jamie Smith suffered a serious injury last Sunday against Ballybay, it clearly demonstrates the importance of having fully trained first aiders present at all games. Thankfully, incidents like these don’t occur that often and normally the drop of magic water does the trick but when it does happen it is very comforting to know that you have qualified people who know the appropriate action to take in an emergency situation until the professionals arrive.  I would like to acknowledge and pay tribute to Tina Rooney and Martina McKeown for taking the initial responsibility and care of Jamie and for providing calm reassurance that help was on the way. Well done ladies. I would also like to thank officials of the Ballybay GAA club for their help and assistance during a most trying and difficult time and off course the ambulance service for their prompt arrival. Thank God everything was okay and on behalf of everyone in the club I extend our best wishes to Jamie and wish him a speedy recovery following his injury and we look forward to seeing him back wearing the Nr. 1 jersey as soon as possible.

Best Wishes

I would also like to extend our best wishes and a speedy recovery to Cathal Sheridan who sustained a shoulder injury at training last Friday. Cathal has been a solid performer for our reserve team and we look forward to seeing him back wearing the Green & White jersey as soon as possible.

Platinum Tanks Reserve Football Championship

The next game for our reserve players will be on Friday 31st May when they take on Sean McDermott’s in the reserve championship (Crawley Cup). The game will take place in Pairc Naomh Mhuire and has a throw-in time of 7.30pm. (extra time if necessary).

Go Games Blitz – Under 10

With the weather conditions playing havoc the under 10 Go Games blitz scheduled for Pairc Naomh Mhuire, last Saturday 18th May, was switched to Cloghan, Annyalla. Competing clubs on the day included Clones, Currin, Drumhown, Tyholland and our own bunch of wee warriors and it is always great to see a good turnout of kids perform at this level and enjoying themselves in a fun environment and that’s what’s it’s all about. It was a very entertaining and successful day and well done to all the boys and girls and their mentors who took part in the blitz. A special word of thanks to our club Youth Officer Pascal Smyth and county Monaghan Development Officer Colin Malone for making the arrangements ahead of the blitz and for ensuring the day ran smoothly.

Go Games Blitz – Under 8’s

Due to Confirmation this weekend the Go Games Blitz for the under 8 players will now take place in Drumhowan. It starts at 10am – and finishes around 12 noon and once again it would be great to see all parents there to encourage and support the kids.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12

The first game on the under 12 summer league takes place this Saturday 25th May. At the time of going to press there were no fixtures so please check official fixture list elsewhere.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14

Our under 14 footballers played their third game, in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Division 4 league campaign, when they played Killeevan at Pairc Naomh Mhuire last Saturday 18th May. It was yet another day for the umbrella with field conditions wet and very slippery but I think all players have become used to the weather conditions by now because despite the terrible weather conditions it was a very entertaining game to watch. With both side lines packed with supporters the game was a very enjoyable game and all players have to be commended for their efforts in difficult conditions. Killeevan showed their strength and pulled away in the last quarter and emerged with a win on a final score-line Rockcorry 8-7 Killeevan 8-13. Sadly, the result did not go in our favour but if the lads continue to show that type of passion and commitment the results will come. Keep up the good work boys. Their next game is on Saturday 1st June when they travel to play Drumhowan at 12 noon.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16

Our under 16 footballers played Castleblayney last Thursday 16th May, and the home side held the upper hand and enjoyed a comfortable 9-7 to 0-2 lead at the break. We only got going in patches and were effectively operating a damage limitation exercise when play resumed for the second period. However, the lads showed their true colours and put up a decent second half display and even out-scored their opponents. The final score Castleblayney 11-10 Rockcorry 3-4. Their next match is on Thursday 23rd May, when they host Doohamlet and the game has a throw-in time of 7.00pm. All players are requested to meet at the dressing-rooms at 6.20pm.

Blackwater 10K Run / Walk

Well done to all the runners and walkers that competed in the Blackwater 10K run and walk on Sunday 19th May. The course had a number of small hills and took place in the picturesque grounds of Rossmore Park. Thankfully, weather conditions were good and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day and well done to all concerned for raising money for local charities. As usual there was a great turnout of people from the Rockcorry area including Thomas & Cathleen McCormick and Michael & Josephine McCormick, Elaine Tate, Felicity McFadden and Breda McFadden, to name but  a few, and huge well done to everyone for taking part in a special day.
