Faoi 12/Under 12s’

Sarsfield Shield

On Saturday last our Under !2s’ welcomed our great rivals Rockcorry to Pairc Na Sairsealaigh to play for the Sarsfield Shield. Having already this season come out the wrong side of some enthralling contests with this opposition the Cill Laobhain lads were fired up for one final attempt at putting one over on An Buíochar boys. It was evident right from the start that the Rock squad were as hungry to get their hands on another trophy as the Killeevan team were to get theirs on a first for this season. Cill Laobhain drew first blood with an early goal and point but Rockcorry were soon back on level terms with similar scores. The middle period of the half saw both teams struggle for supremacy with no quarter given or expected. Scores were hard to come by as both defenses defended as if their lives depended on it. During this period both goalkkeepers pulled off saves that Paul Durcan in the Donegal goal would be proud of. Killeevan did eventually make another breakthrough with another goal and point coming in quick succession. Rockcorry were however right back in it when they struck just before half-time for their second goal, which left the score at the break Cill Laobhain 2-2 An Buiochair 2-1. Both teams made a number of changes as hostilities were resumed after half-time. Rockcorry seemed to have an extra pep in their step at this stage and soon were back on level terms, before another gem of a goal put them out in front for the first time in the game. Some of the best football of the day was played at this stage as An Buiochar tried to tighten the screw and Cill Laobhain did their utmost to keep their heads above water. After a couple of goal chances went a begging Killeevan did something that they had trouble doing all season and that was send over a few long range points. These scores kept them in contention and when they struck for goal number three, they dared to hope that they might hold on for victory, but this Rockcorry team did not achieve the success they had this season by wilting in the face of adversity and as the game went into it’s final minutes they once more seemed to have broken young Killeevan hearts when after a well taken point they pounced for their fourth goal and it seemed like in the words of the great baseball hitter Mickey Mantle “Déja Vu,all over again”. As the referee checked his watch for the first time Cill Laobhain surged forward in one final attack and seemed to have snatched victory when they goaled only to realize the referee had already blown for a free in. With the game going into injury time a goal attempt was made from the free and after the ball was twice blocked on the line it somehow ended up in the net on the third attempt. A quick Rockcorry kick-out went astray and ended up being tapped over the bar for another Killeevan point and a three point lead. The game ended with Cill Laobhain repelling one final Rockcorry attack,to leave the final score Cill Laobhain 4-8, An Buiochar 4-5. So after quite a few defeats at the hands of this opposition the young Killeevan lads have finally enjoyed a well deserved if fortuitous victory, but this was a game where the two teams combined to serve up a classic.

Following the game Killeevan Chairman Darren Greenan congratulated both teams for for putting on display all that is good about Gaelic Football. He spoke of the great rivalry between these two teams this year and and of how the Killeevan team and mentors regard the successes of this Rockcorry group as the benchmark that we have to strive for. The Sarsfield Shield was then presented to the Cill Laobhain captain by our club secretary and County Juvenile P.R.O. Patrica Smith. Medals were then presented to both teams. In conjunction with the Under 12 game an Under 8 contest between the same two clubs took place and both of these young teams were also presented with medals by Patrica.

The organizers would like to thank referee Dermot Lynch for his contribution to making the game a sporting and free flowing event. Dermot serves the Killeevan club year in year out as ”the man in the middle” and is indeed among the top referees in Co Monaghan. We are indeed lucky in the Cill Laobhain club to have someone of the calibre of Dermot and also young referee Kieran Rudden representing us as they keep the peace on the football fields of Co Monaghan. Without men like these our games could not go on. So if ever they do make a mistake at your game please use restraint of tongue. We appreciate Patrica Smith being there to make the presentations. Patrica gives a lot to the juvenile scene both in our club and at county level through her weekly column in the Norther Standard in her position of County Juvenile P R O. Thanks again to the Rockcorry club for bringing their Under 12s’ and Under 8s’to Pairc Na Sairsealaigh and being as ever sporting whether in victory or defeat. We appreciate the work of Rockcorry Youth Officer Pascal Smyth for doing the organizing at their end, also their team mentors who like our own mentors have put in many hours of work with their young charges. To our own Youth Officer Minor McPhillips we say thank you for all your hard work with the Under 12s’ and indeed with all the juveniles. Thanks also to John Smith for his time training our Under 12s’ and we wish him and the 3 members of our squad who will be involved in Under 12 Girls Final against Truagh the very best of luck. Thanks also to Michael Carroll who took a fantastic pictorial record of the whole day. Finally to the parents from Rockcorry and Killeevan who came out to support the young ones, we appreciate you being there. Míle buíochas gach duine as bhur dtacaíocht ar an lá agus i rith na bliana..
