Scotstown Notes

September 25th, 2012

Seniors: Scotstown defeated Currin by 2-16 to 0-14 in the Senior Football League in Scotshouse on Friday night. The foundation for the win was laid in the opening ten minutes with points from James Hamill (2), Kieran Hughes and 1-1 from Shane Carey. Goalkeeper Rory Beggan also got on the scoresheet with a well-taken point from a placed kick. Scotstown were awarded another close-range free in the dying minutes of the half, and as the Currin defence were getting organised, Shane Carey took the free quickly and hammered the ball into the roof of the net to send the Blues in leading 2-11 to 0-5 at half-time. Currin got the first point of the second half, before Carey replied with a point for the visitors six minutes later. Both sides swapped points for the remainder of the game, but Currin were unable get the goal they needed to bring them back into the game. Dermot McCrudden, Brian McGinnity & Paul Sherlock got the last three Scotstown points of the game as they won by 2-16 to 0-14. The win secures Senior football for another year for Scotstown, and moves them up to fourth place in the table with a semi-final spot still a possibility. The Scotstown team and scorers were: R Beggan (0-1); Duffy, Carroll, Morgan; McPhillips, Turley, Maguire; F Caulfield (c), D Hughes ; Carey (2-5), Hamill (0-2), McArdle; McCrudden (0-1), Heaphey, K Hughes (0-5). Under 14’s: Well done to our U14 Division 1 side which completed the double by winning the League Final on Saturday last against Truagh.  They had to work hard to achieve this win against a gallant Truagh side that had been unbeaten right through the league campaign. Scotstown made the better start as they led by 1-3 to 0-1 in the first quarter, with Adrian Grew hitting 1-1 and points each from Conor Mallon and Leonard McDermott.  Scotstown extended their advantage in the second quarter when James Sherry was on target with two points, and a pointed free by Adrian Grew at the end of the quarter gave them a seven point advantage at half time 1-6 to 0-2. Truagh responded well in third quarter, with a goal from the throw setting them up for a good quarter. Our defence of Padraig Meehan, Ben McDevitt, Colum Claisse, Lorcan Murray & Jamie McKenna had to sustain a lot of pressure but they stayed solid and showed character and fought to the end. Our goalie, Darragh McKenna who was alert and read every attack possible in the game, was unfortunate when Truagh scored a second goal to leave a point between the sides at the end of the third quarter. The management made a few positional switches which paid dividends. It was a fine quarter for substitute Jack Mohan who hit two fine points, and Ruairi McKenna also got on the score sheet, before he limp off injured & replaced by Tiarnan McGonnell. The final quarter ended on a score of 1-10 to 2-3, and the joint captains Lorcan Murray & Jamie McKenna were in joyous mood when they accepted the Cup on behalf of their team. Scotstown team and scorers: Darragh McCague, Padraig Meehan, Ben McDevitt, Colum Claisse, Lorcan Murray, Jamie McKenna, James Sherry (0-2), Ruairi McKenna (0-1), Conor Mallon (0-1), Adrian Grew (1-3), Fergal Sherlock, Leonard McDermott (0-1), Eanna Deery. Subs: Ronan King, Tiarnan McGonnell, Jack Mohan (0-2), Cillian Sherry, Conor Creighan, James McCague, Mark Mohan, Shane Moran, Donal McKenna.
