CLUB NOTES

18th September 2012

Golf Classic

Get your clubs and swing ready because this Saturday 22nd September all roads lead to the scenic Clones Golf Club for our inaugural fund raising golf classic event which is kindly sponsored by the Town of Monaghan Co-op and McNally Crane Hire. The golf classic is an important fund raiser for the club as well as being a great social occasion and the day will begin at 8.00am with the first team teeing off followed by nineteen holes of challenging golf. On behalf of the club I want to thank all the teams and tee sponsors for supporting our golf classic and we look forward to a wonderful day of good golf, good fun and hope the weather and playing conditions are kind to you. Best of luck to all golfers and keep on swinging, that’s “swinging” Cathal not “digging”!!!

Golf Classic Presentations

The presentation of prizes will take place in the Maple Bar later on Saturday night and there will be live music and refreshments on the night. In addition, if you want to laugh and have fun then local comedian Lorcan McGrane will guarantee to make you smile and laugh your tail off, so come out, relax and have some fun! Along with the fabulous prizes on offer there will also be some novelty spot prizes for the longest drive, nearest the pin, the most putts and off course the golfer who loses the most golf balls and I have been told that Stephen Lynch has opened a book and is currently taking bets! I know who my money is on!

Bosco Carroll Memorial Cup

Following on from the success of the Terence Reilly Memorial Shield a couple of weeks ago the club switched their attention to the under 10 players and held a four team tournament in memory of my father, Bosco Carroll. There was a massive turnout of kids from neighbouring clubs Aghabog, Killeevan and Latton who joined our bunch of wee warriors to battle it out for the Memorial Cup. Last year’s tournament we witnessed some terrific football and this year proved to be another fascinating and absorbing competition because we were treated to some fabulous matches where all kids played their hearts outs. It is always great to see the future stars of the clubs perform at this level and it’s great to see so many kids really enjoying themselves. There was fine attacking and flowing football on show and there was hardly a break in play which certainly left it very entertaining for the large crowd in attendance. In what was a pleasant and dry day the semi-final pairings saw Aghabog v Latton and Rockcorry v Killeevan and after two outstanding matches the Latton and Rockcorry teams progressed for a repeat showdown of last year’s final. The final was another breathe-taking encounter with the play swinging from end to end but sadly it was Latton’s ability to convert possession into scores and ultimately emerge as winners to retain the Bosco Carroll Memorial Cup and I congratulate them on their victory. On behalf of my family, I would like to thank everyone who helped out in every way to organise the event. Thanks to the Latton, Aghabog and Killeevan clubs and are own club for taking part in the competition and for making it such a wonderful and enjoyable occasion. To everyone involved with the various teams within the juvenile ranks for taking the time to nurture and coach all the kids. To our youth officer, Pascal Smyth, who once again left no stone unturned in his preparation and for making sure the tournament ran smoothly and I am sure you will agree it was a huge success. To the ladies behind the scene Tina Rooney, Ann Lynch and Martina McKeown who are always there to help out with providing refreshments at various activities and they certainly did not let the side down once again. Many thanks to Anthony Tate and Mark Hughes for carrying out the refereeing duties on the day and for doing such a great job and finally, thanks to all the parents and supporters who travelled on the day, you make a big difference for the kids on the pitch.

Under 14 Team

Our under 14 footballers were in action last Saturday 15th September when they travelled to play Clontibret in the league campaign. The game was a one-sided affair as our lads completely dominated from start to finish and recorded a comfortable victory on a score-line Clontibret 0-10 Rockcorry 10-16. The performance was made up of some terrific individual displays and it would be wrong for me to single out anyone in particular as the team as a whole played so well. We have now qualified for the semi-final of the Shield competition which is due to take place next weekend. Team: Kyle Brannigan, Caolan McPhillips, Gareth Smith, Damien West, Paddy James, Mark Duffy, Pauric O’Brien, Vincent O’Brien, Caoilainn Gallagher, Morgan McGeough and Gavin West. Well done lads and keep up the good work.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

The senior team will be back in action on Saturday 29th September when they take on Donaghmoyne in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league. The game will take place at Pairc Naomh Mhurie and throw-in time is 5.00pm. On Saturday 13th October we have another home game against Doohamlet and throw-in time is 4.30pm
