St Macartans & Our Lady’s Blayney emerge victorious in Second Level Senior Boys Football blitz

September 20th, 2012

On Wednesday evening past saw the Senior Boys Secondary School 7 a side blitz take place in Monaghan County Training Grounds Cloghan. A total of 8 Schools (10 teams) took part in the blitz, they were St Macartans College(2 teams), Our Lady’s Castleblayney, Castleblayney College, Colaiste Oiriall Monaghan, Patrician High School, Inver College, Ballybay Community College and Cootehill Comprehensive School Cavan (2 teams). The evening proved to be very entertaining with a high standard of football and committment by all who took part.

The Format – The teams were divided into two groups of 5, with the top two teams in each group going through to the cup competition, the 3rd & 4th placed teams in each group played in the sheild competition and the 5th placed teams played in a playoff.  Semi Finals & Finals then proceeded the group stages. The scoring rules where adopted to encourage long range point taking, goals were worth a point and a 3 pointer was awarded when a score was kicked from outside the 35m zone.

In the cup competition St Macartans & Patrician High School played out a very high intensity game with high skills levels on show by both teams. Extra time was needed to separte these teams with St Macartans College emerging victorous by 3 points.  In the sheild competition Our Lady’s Castleblayney & Ballybay Community College played each other in the decider. Again in another keenly contested final, Our Lady’s Castleblayney emerged as worthy winners despite of a very strong second half display by Ballybay Community College.

Monaghan Coaching and & Games would like to thank all the Schools, teachers & players for taking part in the bitz and for their continued support in developing Gaelic games within their Schools. In addition to this we would like to thank the referees who ensured that all involved had an enjoyable evening.
