Castleblayney Notes

September 21st, 2012

Lotto – There was no jackpot winner of the lotto draw this week which took place on Monday night 17.9.12 in Tavey’s Bar. The four lucky dips winners of €50 each were Anne Treanor, Olivia Hobbs, Bart McNamara, Cairde and J. Marron, C/o Stephen Marron. The numbers drawn were 6, 15, 16, 19. Next weeks’ draw will place in Dignam’s Bar on Monday 24/9/12. Thanks to everyone for your continued support and good luck in next week’s draw.

Seniors – The seniors suffered a narrow 1-11 to 0-12 defeat in their championship encounter with Clontibret at the weekend. Its back to league fare this weekend with a home game against Monaghan Harps on Saturday evening, throw-in at 5PM in Oram.

Junior B – Still no word on our league semi-final opponents. The league stage has now finished with three teams level in 4th position and they must play-off for the final semi berth. More info in coming weeks.

Minor – The Faughs minors reached the Championship Final after a never say die 1-12 to 0-14 victory over Carrickmacross in Inniskeen on Saturday. Blayney started poorly, possibly a hangover from last Saturdays league final defeat, and trailed by six points to two after 15 minutes. A well worked move then gave Mark Kelly a goal opportunity and he duly finished to the net to bring us back into the game. Another point quickly followed to level the scores but Blayney were then reduced to 14 men after an off the ball incident. Far from hampering the young Faughs it seemed to spur them on and they added the next two scores before Carrick responded in kind to leave the scores level 1-05 to 0-08 at HT. The second half was to be a see-saw affair with both teams having spells of dominance but throughout Blayney managed to keep their noses in front by a point or two. Carricks numerical advantage began to take effect in the final 10 minutes and it seems as though they had done enough when they took the lead as the game entered injury time. However Blayney weren’t to be denied as first Aaron McNamara with a long range score and then brother Ronan who coolly fisted over to send the Blayney supporters into rapture. The drama wasn’t finished there as straight from the kick-out Carrick broke to the other end and keeper Micheal Brennan made a fantastic save to deny Carrick a winning goal. Finally the referee blew his whistle to great Blayney cheers. Team: M Brennan; J Walsh, F McGeough, N McCann; A McNamara, F Malone, M Kelly; J Beattie, B Hanratty; A McElroy, D McMahon, R McNamara; B Duffy ,C McNally, K Mackin. Subs: E McCann

Well done – Well done to former Blayney star Jason Hughes who formed part of the Guernsey Gaels team who won the first Pan European Football Championship in Copenhagen over the weekend.
