ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

31st July 2012

Golf Classic

Calling all golfers, golfing enthusiasts and if you’re like me “sometimes golfers”. The club has decided to hold a Golf Classic on Saturday 22nd September so please spread the word to all your golfing buddies. This will consist of teams of four people playing on the Clones Golf course and fantastic prizes will be up for grabs on the day. The cost to enter a team is €120.00 and to book your place please contact our chairman Jimmy McGeough 087-9457279 or myself Michael Carroll 086-1041165 and a member of the organising committee will be in contact with you to discuss your availability to play. There are also exciting opportunities for businesses, families and individuals to advertise by sponsoring a tee or a green for a reasonable €50. If you are unable to play golf but would still like to make a contribution perhaps you would be interested in sponsoring a prize for a raffle. If so please get in touch we would be delighted to talk to you.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

If you’re like me, then you’re totally enjoying all the Olympic Games coverage currently dominating our TV screens! Equally, enjoyable was the performance of our senior team, last Wednesday 25th July, as they continued their winning ways when they edged out Tyholland in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league. During the opening twenty minutes of the match we were undoubtedly the better team. Our display was full of energy and movement that Tyholland couldn’t deal with as we played some lovely free-flowing football, that was a delight to watch, and raced into a 0-1 to 1-5 lead. However, for some unexplained phenomenon, we hit the self-destruct button and for the remaining ten minutes of the half we struggled as Tyholland gained the upper hand and notched over some fine points to leave the score at the interval Tyholland 0-6 Rockcorry 1-7. When the second half resumed Tyholland continued where they left off and by the mid-way of the second half the sides were level with the scoreboard showing 0-11 to 1-8. In the past when games are tight and the pressure gets too much we sometimes have a tendency to wilt away but I have to say the lads showed a lot of fighting character and determination and finished the match with a convincing and sturdy performance with ALL players working extremely hard for each other and secured the victory on a final score-line Tyholland 0-11 Rockcorry 1-13. Please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie for full match report and to view a selection of action photographs.

McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship

After last weekend’s championship fixtures we now know who our opponents will be in the next round of the McGuigan Builders intermediate football championship because Doohamlet defeated Inniskeen by 2-7 to 0-10. I understand the game has been provisionally fixed for Sunday 19th August in Clontibret so please mark this date down on your calendar.

Table Quiz

I imagine with all the Googling, Binging and Yahooing search engines were pretty bust last Friday evening when our senior players organised a table quiz in St. Mary’s Hall! The evening was a huge success due to the generosity of the local community with thirteen teams totaling over 60 members participating and the players have asked me to extend a sincere THANK YOU to everybody who supported and attended the quiz. Many thanks to Ollie McQuillan, who was a great quiz master on the night, and he put a huge amount of effort into preparing great questions and Siobhan McQuillan was on hand to manage and check the answers and she also looked after the scoreboard and thank you to her for her work. After ten  interesting rounds of questions two teams finished with an impressive ninety-two points out of one hundred. After a very tense tie-breaker the quiz was won by Elaine & Anthony Tate, Breda Cleary and Cormac McFadden and they generously donated first prize back to the club and the runners-up included Emer & Jimmy McGeough, Martina & Paddy McKeown and likewise they also donated their prize back to the fund raiser and very well done to the winners and everybody that took part. Finally, on behalf of the club I would also like to thank the following companies and individuals who sponsored spot prizes or made private donations. Gerry Colye, Paddy Lynch, Cait O’Hart, Maple Bar, Loughbawn Hotel, Ann Carroll, Pauric Reilly and H&B Cootehill.

Good Luck

All the best to the Monaghan minor team who travel to Newry this this Sunday 5th August to take on  Dublin in the quarter final of the All Ireland football championship. Good luck lads.

Under 16 Team

The under 16 team, Rock Emmets, despite their recent defeat in the last league game have still finished fourth in the table and thus qualify for the league semi-final. Their opponents on the 16th August are undecided due to one remaining fixture still to be played. Well done lads and keep up the good work.
