ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

26th June 2012

Congratulations Canon Ferguson

First of all on behalf of the club may I extend my heartiest congratulations to Canon Gerard Ferguson who celebrated his 60th anniversary of his ordination to the Priesthood last Friday 22nd June. Family members, friends and parishioners from various parishes gathered for a Thanksgiving Mass held in St. Mary’s Corravacan and afterwards attended a special presentation night in St. Mary’s Hall. Serving in any profession for sixty years is a remarkable achievement and he has indelibly made his mark and touched the lives of so many people during this time. He is an extraordinary man, generous, humble and always ready to listen, to understand and to sympathise and we thank you Canon Ferguson for dedicating your life to peaching the Word of God. On the night one of the most moving and interesting moments was a “This is Your Life” presentation that remembered special events during his life with a selection of photographs and video clips from friends who recalled stories and wonderful memories about his life. Another touching occasion was the performance of a song entitled “The Priest from Belcoo”. The song was specially written for the occasion and it was performed by local musicians Thomas McCormick and Mick McCormick and it was certainly a magical moment. It would be unfair to single out any individuals so a massive well done to everyone who helped organise the event and on behalf of the club, and indeed my own family, I wish you Canon Ferguson a long life and good health for many years to come. God Bless you.

Kerry Legend – Are You Ready?

A couple of weeks ago I broke the news that the club were making final arrangements to get the Kerry football legend Mick O’Dwyer to visit the club. This week I am very excited to report that the man who has been there, done that and has got the silverware to prove it and is arguably one of the most successful managers in our time will be making a visit to the club (provisionally) next Tuesday 3rd July. You better be ready because you don’t want to miss this!

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

The past week was fairly quiet and uneventful for our senior team but they were scheduled to play Inniskeen yesterday evening (Wednesday 27th June) in the Intermediate football league. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie for all latest results and fixtures.

McGuigan Builders Intermediate Football Championship

The next outing for our senior team will be in the first round of the intermediate championship against Corduff. The first round of the championship is always a defining moment and we hope a large crowd of supporters will get behind the team for this occasion. The game has been fixed for Saturday 7th July at 7.00pm and will take place in Drumhowan.

Playing Attire

All players are reminded that it is compulsory to wear the proper club colours for all games but particularly during championship matches. Can all players please make sure they have green and white socks and white togs with green strips or with the club crest. Remember lads you are representing you club when you walk on to the pitch.

Under 12 Competitive League

The rescheduled game for the under 12 team against Killeevan will take place this Monday 2nd July at 7pm.

Under 14 Championship Final

Last Tuesday 19th June our under 14 team competed in the final of the championship and unfortunately suffered a heavy defeat against a physically stronger Truagh side on a score-line Truagh 3-17 Rockcorry 1-2. The game was played in Drumhowan and conditions were excellent and while we started the game well with an early goal, Truagh responded in style with three unanswered points and by the end of the first quarter the contest was all square as the scoreboard showed Truagh 0-3 Rockcorry 1-0.  During the second quarter Truagh seized the initiative and took complete control of the game and notched up an impressive 1-7 without reply to take a commanding 1-10 to 1-0 advantage at the midway point. The third quarter continued in a similar pattern as the second with Truagh applying all the pressure and stormed further ahead when they scored a further 1-6 to lead by 2-16 to 1-0. To the lads credit they never gave up and showed great spirit and character and were very unlucky not to have registered more scores during the course of the match but in the end it was to be Truagh’s day as they fully deserved the victory on a final score-line Truagh 3-17 Rockcorry 1-2 and congratulations to them on their win. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie for a selection of action photographs.

Under 14 League Fixtures

The under 14 team has a home game against Currin this Saturday 30th June at 12 noon.

Under 16 Team

The exam break did not do our under 16 team any harm because last Thursday they secured a comfortable victory over Blackhill. They are back in action again tonight Thursday 28th June when they travel to play Inniskeen at 7pm.

Minor League

The minor team, Rock-Sarfields, were scheduled to play Latton last Tuesday 26th June. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie for all latest results and fixtures.

Go Games Blitz

An Under 8 and Under 10 double blitz takes place tonight Thursday 28th June in Corduff at 7.30pm. All players are to meet at the dressing-rooms at 6.45pm.

Monaghan v Down

Unfortunately, sport can be so, so cruel! After playing so well for long periods of the match the Monaghan senior team were just pipped at the end of a thrilling game. Hard luck lads and keep the heads up for the qualifiers. On the other hand the minor team put in a good performance to secure the victory and more importantly a place in this year’s Ulster Final. Clones here we come.

Guess The Score Competition

Who predicted a Down win? That’s what I would like to know! Who had the nerve to predict a Down victory? Who used their head instead of their heart? These are important questions and we will all be watching with great interest next week when the winner is announced of our recent “Guess the Score” competition that was organized by our juvenile committee.
