“Rock Country & Irish Night”
OMG, what a night we had last Friday 27th April at our Rock Country & Irish show. We were promised entertainment, we were promised excitement. We were promised great songs being performed by great singers and boy, they did not disappoint. Weeks of preparation, hours of dedicated commitment from all the singers, musicians working hard behind the scenes all culminated in a FANTASTIC night of entertainment. It was Awesome! The atmosphere on the night was amazing as thirteen very talented singers from the village and surrounding areas took part in our Rock Country & Irish night to perform their favourite Country & Western and traditional Irish ballads and they did so in tremendous style. Many thanks to Noel Hall who was our Master of Ceremonies and he kept the crowd laughing and eased the nerves of the performers. First up on stage was Ollie McQuillan and he got the evening off to a great start with his performance of ‘Think of Me’. Next to hit the stage was Annette Hillis and she gave us a smooth rendition of ’Nancy Myles’. Hughie Carroll gave us his version of ‘A Country Girl in Paris’ with Martina McDermott treating us to a ‘Cottage in the Country’. Next up on stage was Tracey Rooney who sang her favourite song ‘Carrickfergus’ and the ballad group consisting of Elaine Tate, Pat McCormick, Kelly Crowe, Brian McGill and Tracey Rooney belted out one of the Dubliners classics ‘The Ferryman’. Walter Brown then gave his delivery of ‘Isle of Innisfree’ and Fionnuala McQuillan thrilled us with a timeless Jeannie C Riley song entitled ‘Harper Valley PTA’. Cait Fleming blew us away when she sang ‘Galway Bay’ while Irene McCormick brought the roof down when she concluded the show with her performance of ‘Pick Me Up On Your Way Down’. The performances were blistering and the music was infectious and it penetrated your body and you just had to dance, clap and YEE-HAW along. The response from the crowd, who came from near and far including a couple who travelled from Spain, was amazing. Like me, they thoroughly enjoyed the show and were deeply appreciative of their efforts as they clapped, shouted and encouraged all the singers. “The best night’s craic I’ve had in a long time” was the general consensus from people leaving the show and congratulations to all involved. I would like to pay special recognition to the main event organiser Ollie McQuillan who just could not have done more to make the night more enjoyable. Robert Brown the music director and producer who was instrumental in his leadership for producing the various backing tracks and giving advice to all the singers and, as always, he kept the crowd going. Congratulations to everyone involved.
Rock Country & Irish CD
A lot of work went into the Rock Country night and the production of the CD and the fruits of those labours were very evident last Friday night. You can buy a copy of the CD entitled “Rock Country & Irish, The Ultimate Collection” for a reasonable €10. So please contact any of the singers or send an email to rockcorrygaa@live.ie or send a text message to 086-1041165 with your details and we will send a copy to you as soon as possible.
Inniskeen 0-7 Rockcorry 1-14
It’s no secret that the senior team has been struggling to find their form due to a crippling injury list but after a three game losing streak they made the long journey to Pairc Grattan to play Inniskeen in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league on Wednesday 25th April and thankfully they rediscovered their mojo with emphatic fashion! The game was played in bitterly cold, wet and very miserable conditions and only the true hardy souls travelled to support the team. During the first half we managed to keep pace with Inniskeen, who were playing with the aid of a strong wind, and at the interval the scoreboard showed Inniskeen 0-6 Rockcorry 0-4. On the restart the game decisively swung to our advantage as we totally dominated the game and all the wayward shooting and passing that we witnessed in the opening league games vanished as the scores came hot and heavy and we achieved our first league points on a final score-line Inniskeen 0-7 Rockcorry 1-14. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie for full match report and a selection of action photographs. Team & Scorers: Jamie Smith, Conor McGeough, Damien Matthews, Keelan Clerkin, Stephen McGuirk, Johnny Reilly, Colin Quinn, Mark Daly 0-2, Noel Carroll 0-2, Keith Daly, Paul McKeown 1-3, Dwayne Rooney 0-1, Anthony Tate, Mark McGuirk 0-5 and Lorcan Smyth 0-1. Subs: Rory Carroll for Stephen McGuirk (injured), Ross Murray for Lorcan Smyth.
Rockcorry 0-11 Cremartin 2-5
Unfortunately, our mojo didn’t last long because last Sunday afternoon, 29th April, the senior team played Cremartin in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league and stumbled with a lackluster performance and really can count themselves lucky to have left with a share of the spoils. Because, midway through the second half, Cremartin looked set to collect both league points when they led by 0-5 to 2-5 but suddenly we threw caution to the wind and raised the tempo of the game and drew level on the 30th minute. Indeed we could have stolen a win in those exciting final minutes but the game ended all square Rockcorry 0-11 Cremartin 2-5. Please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie for a full match report and a selection of action photographs. Team & Scorers: Jamie Smith, Conor McGeough, Damien Matthews, Keelan Clerkin, Stephen McGuirk, Johnny Reilly, Colin Quinn, Mark Daly 0-3, Noel Carroll 0-1, Lorcan Smyth 0-3, Paul McKeown, Keith Daly, Mark McGuirk 0-2, Fergal McGeough and Anthony Tate. Subs: Garry Calvert 0-1 for Anthony Tate (injured) and Dwayne Rooney 0-1 for Fergal McGeough (injured)
Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League Fixtures
The next game for our senior team is scheduled for Friday 11th April when they travel to Corduff.
Reserve Football Championship
Our reserve team bowed out of the Crawley Cup (Reserve Football Championship) after a very lethargic performance against Aughnamullen last Friday evening (27th April). The handful of home spectators present had little cause to get excited or encouraged as Aughnamullen showed the greater bite and just brushed aside our very feeble efforts. Despite an admirable rally towards the end of the game Aughnamullen, who were the sharper team, were always in control and the concession of a whopping 3-17 left us far too much to do as they recorded a comfortable victory on a score-line Rockcorry 1-8 Aughnamullen 3-17. Team & Scorers: Aaron Clerkin, Michael Carroll, Eoin Fitzpatrick, John Greenan, Colin Quinn 1-2, Johnny Reilly, Conor McGeough, Rory Carroll, Barry Patterson, Shane Wynne, Dwayne Rooney 0-4, Ross Murray, Felix Granaghan, Anthony Tate 0-1 and Andrew Carroll. Sub: Garry Calvert 0-1 for Eoin Fitzpatrick (injured).
GRM Minor Football League
There are some games that stand out above all others. For example, the three epic matches against Magheracloone in last year’s minor football championship, were delightful to watch and thrilling encounters. Likewise, when the sides met on Tuesday 24th April in the GRM minor football league it was yet another fascinating and memorable contest between two evenly matched teams. Sadly, it was a pity that we were on the wrong side of a 2-21 to 4-13 score-line as Magheracloone certainly had to pull out all the stops to secure the victory. However, on the basis of their performance I imagine the team management will be quite pleased with the efforts displayed from all the players as the lads worked extremely hard for each other and showed great team spirit. Last Tuesday evening (1st May) they were scheduled to play Donaghmoyne. Please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie for all latest results and fixtures. This Tuesday 8th May they travel to play Sean McDermotts and the game has a throw-in time of 7.30pm.
Under 16 Team
Well done to our under 16 team Rock-Emmets (Rock and Aghabog) who recorded their first league win last Thursday 26th April when they played Scotstown B team. The score was 0-5 to 5-14. Their next game is tonight Thursday 3rd May when they travel to play Killeevan at 7.00pm.
Under 8 Blitz
Due to First Communion taking place in the parish on Saturday 12th May and the Under 12 finals scheduled for Cloghan we will now host the under 8 Go Games blitz this Monday 7th May between 5.00 – 7.00pm. Visiting clubs will be Aghabog, Aughnamullen, Drumhowan and Tyholland and we would very much appreciate it if people could come down and offer a hand to help co-ordinate the event.
Under 8’s & 10’s
Just a reminder that coaching for all the under 8 players continues every Saturday mornings between 10.00–11.00am. Under 10’s training continues every Monday evening between 6.20–7.30pm and on Saturday mornings at 10.00am. We would encourage parent participation and all players are welcome to attend these coaching sessions.
Under 12 Team
Last Saturday morning the under 12 team played their third game of the Spring league competition when they played Corduff. The game took place in lovely weather conditions and while they had plenty of possession they unfortunately could not convert it onto the scoreboard. Corduff on the other hand were a lot more economical with their chances and secured the victory. Their next outing will be the finals which will take place on Saturday 12th May in Cloghan training grounds.
Under 14 Team
Our under 14 team are back in action this Tuesday 8th May when they play Clones B team at Pairc Naomh Mhuire at 7.00pm.
