BORD GAIS LEAGUE TEAM OF THE YEAR

On Tuesday night last at a function in Croke Park, the Bord Gais Teams of the League 2012 were announced. During the league campaign, each manager after every game  has to nominate their best player from the opposing team and on completion of the league, the top 15 players who receive the most votes are selected onto the Teams of the league for each of the 4 Divisions. Monaghan had 5 players selected onto the Division 1 League Team of the Year :  Linda Martin, Sharon Courtney, Joanne Courtney, Ciara Mc Anespie and Caoimhe Mohan. A wonderful achievement for the 5 girls. Well Done to all.

At the announcement of the League Players of the Year, Investec, Monaghan ladies new sponsors for the coming year made a presentation to Chairperson Marie Brady in recognition of them winning the League final. Pictured in the photo are from left to right, Sharon Mc Meel(Secretary), Caoimhe Mohan, Sharon Courtney, Marie Brady(Chairperson), Jacinta Nangle(Investec), Linda Martin, Ciara Mc Anespie and Joanne Courtney

After their National League win, it was back to training as usual for the senior girls. They play Tryone in the opening Ulster championship game and it is reported this game will be a curtain raiser to the men’s championship game between Donegal and Derry. More details on this next week.

ALL IRELAND U14 BLITZ

Monaghan’s U14 team travelled to Mullingar on Saturday last to take part in the All Ireland Blitz. After their excellent win in the Ulster final the previous week, expectations were high. Unfortunately a number of key players from the Ulster final starting team were unavailable to travel on Saturday as were a number of replacements.

Monaghan were in a group along with Kerry, Kildare and Roscommon.

In the warm up Monaghan suffered the loss of another key player Micheala Mc Cabe . First game was against Kerry. Each game was 13 mins a half so Monaghan needed to get off to a good start. However it seemed to take a long time for the team to settle. It was a closely fought game but in the end Monaghan lost out by 5 points. Next up was Kildare. Monaghan did play well in stages of the game but it just didn’t seem to be Monaghan’s day with captain Eimear Mc Anespie forced to come off due to injury. The girls tried their best to keep in touch but in the end Kildare ran out winners the final score Kildare 2-7  Monaghan 1-3.

With their chances of qualifying for the next stages gone, Monaghan gave all their players a run in the final game against Roscommon. This gave the management a chance to look at players for the upcoming All Ireland semi final. The players gave their best shot, but were beaten in the end by a stronger Roscommon side.

It was disappointing not to make the final stages of the competition, but the girls tried their best and missing so many players didn’t help their cause.

The All Ireland semi final is next up for this team. A big effort will now be needed. The management have to reduce the panel to 30 so it is vital that all players put in an effort at training in the coming week.
