Truagh Notes

April 17th, 2012

Seniors: We lost out to Castleblayney in our opening league game last Wednesday night in St. Mellans.  Mark Counihan opened our scoring account of the year with a 8th minute point to put us in front. In the 9th minute we had the luxury of having the advantage of an additional player after the sending off of a ‘blayney player. Despite this, it was an even contest for the remainder of the half with Pauric Treanor getting our second point of the game and Markl Couionhan converting 3 frees to put us 2 in front in the 23rd minute. Despite the numerical disadvantage, it was Castleblayney who struck the games only goal in the 28th minute to go 1-5 0-5 ahead. Counihan responded with a pointed free in injury time to leave the half time score Gaeil Triucha 0-6 Casleblayney 1-5.  Upon the re-start, it was Castleblayney who started stronger registering 2 points by the 34th minute to go 4 ahead. We controlled the game in the following 20 minutes, yet failed to convert several chances. Scoring only 3 times, and all from the place-kicking of Mark Counihan, we were 2 points behind by the 52nd minute. In the 59th minute, Castleblayney increase their lead, 22 minute s from their previous score. In an eventful injury time, it was the Faughs who added to the scoreboard, hitting another 2 points to put 5 between the sides. It also seen 3 red cards, with Truagh sub, Sean McKenna and 2 ‘blayney players being the recipients.  The full time whistle then blew to the score of Gaeil Triucha 0-9 Castleblayney 1-11. Our team and scorers were: Ian Treanor; John McCarron, Rory Treanor, Niall Feely; Keith Sheerin, Paudie McKenna, Aidan Coyle; Pauric Treanor (0-1), Niall McQuillan; John Treanor, Mark Counihan (0-8, 7f), Niall Coyle; Darren Todd, Gary Todd, Daniel Finnegan. Subs Used: Christopher McKenna for Darren Todd (39mins), Damien McRory for Niall McQuillan (46mins), Sean McKenna for Keith Sheerin (50mins) & Brendan Treanor for Gary Todd (52mins). We then played round 2 away to Magheracloone last Sunday afternoon but came away with a second defeat, 1-9 to 0-14. In a competitive first half, we started well, taking a 0-4 to 0-2 lead after 14 minutes with a hatrick of points from Mark Counihan and one from Niall Coyle. Magheracloone levelled 2 minutes later, converting frees- a trait that was starting to become the norm for the home side. Points were then traded with points coming from Christopher McKenna and Paudie McKenna to keep the scores even at 0-6 each after 20 minutes. Magheracloone then went ahead in the 23rd minute before Mark Counihan punched the ball to the net to register our first goal of the year and put us ahead. Just before the break, Mageracloone narrowed the lead with another free to leave the half time score Magheracloone 0-8 Gaeil Triucha 1-6. Magheracloone resumed the second half with a score to level matters. We responded with 3 quick points, scored from Daniel Finnegan and a brace from sub Neil McRory, to put us 3 ahead with 22 minutes to go. However, it was to be our last contribution to the score board, as Magheracloone levelled in the 52nd minute after hitting 3 points. We were then reduced to 14 when Paudie McKenna received 2 yellows inside 3 minutes with 3 minutes remaining. The home side finished the game scoring an additional 2 frees in injury time to gain the match points and send us home on the wrong end of 1-9 to 0-14 scoreline. Our team and scorers were: Ian Treanor; Aidan Coyle, Niall Feely, John Treanor; John McCarron, Rory Treanor, Eoghan Kelly; Pauric Treanor, Niall McQuillan; Christopher McKenna (0-1), Paudie McKenna (0-1), Niall Coyle (0-1); Mark Counihan (1-3), Paddy McKenna, Daniel Finnegan (0-1).
