Castleblayney Notes

March 6th, 2012

Ulster League – The seniors saved their best performance of the league for the final group match as they defeated Moortown 1-15 to 1-11 to qualify for the semi-final stage of the competition.  Blayney made a fast start and had 1-3 on the scoreboard in the opening 10 minutes with the goal coming from a speculative effort from midfielder Gary Ward to a solitary point from Moortown. The remainder of the half was pretty even with good scores at both ends and Blayney lead 1-8 to 0-6 at the interval. The second half began in similiar fashion to the first with Blayney in the ascendancy and by the midpoint Blayney were 6 clear. A couple of Moortown points reduced the defecit and when they found the net with 5 minutes to go the game was back in the melting pot. Blayney regrouped and won some crucial kickouts in the middle of the field and coolly tapped over 3 points in the closing minutes to seal the victory. The victory means we have qualified for the semi-final and are drawn to face Killybegs. The game will take place in Killybegs this Saturday at 2.30PM. Should any supporters wish to travel the will be places on the team bus, more information later in the week.

Junior B – The Junior Bs begin their season this Sunday with a home game against Truagh, the game takes place in Toome and throw-in is at 12PM.

Junior C – The Cs opened their league season with a well merited 4-09 to 1-07 win over Rockcorry last Sunday 04th March 2012. Winning the league in 2011 means they are operating at a higher level this season but the signs are good that they will be able to make the step up.  It was the veteran of the team Ray McArdle who opened the scoring in the 1st minute followed by further scores from David McMahon and Pauric Greene. David Callan then found the net on his return from a long injury lay-off to give Blayney a comfortable half-time lead. It was in the 2nd period that Blayney really found their shooting boots and goals from McMahon, Greene and Fergal Duffy stretched the lead.

Team and scorers: Bart McNamara; Bernard McDonald, Darren Malone, Cormac McNally; Brian Flanagan, Niall Dignam, Ultan Brady; Paddy Finnegan, Fergal Duffy (1-0), Ciaran McGinn (0-1), Pauric Greene (1-2), David McMahon (1-2), Ray McArdle (0-2), David Callan (1-2)
