Ulster League – There was heartbreak for the seniors on Saturday when they went down to a 1-09 to 1-06 defeat to Killybegs in their Ulster League semi-final clash. As with the league game there was little between the teams and it took a penalty from Killybegs in ET to finally settle the issue.
Forced to travel without several regulars Blayney fielded an experimental team and will be very happy with their performance on the day. Scoring chances were at a premium and in a low-scoring first half Blayneys only score was a goal from Padraig McBennett. The goal came either side of Killybegs points and gave Blayney a narrow advantage at half time. Two early 2nd half points extended the Faughs lead but with tiredness creeping in Killybegs got the next four scores to lead as the game entered its final few minutes but Blayney dug deep and a late point sent the game to extra-time. The defining monent of the game came early in the first period of extra-time when Killybegs were awarded a penally which they converted to lead by three and try as they might Blayney couldn’t bridge the gap and Killybegs were through to the final.
Team and scorers: Bart McNamara: Ultan Brady, Kealan Duffy, Marc McHugh; Cormac Brady, Paddy Mallon, Damian Hughes; Conor Gurn (0-1), Francis Moore; Ciaran McGinn, Michael Gurn, Stephen Duffy (0-1); Gary Ward, Padraig McBennett (1-4), Gerry Brady. Subs Marty McElroy for Gary Ward.
