ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

20th December 2011

Thank You Siobhan McQuillan

I’d like to begin this week by paying tribute to Siobhan McQuillan whose long association with Monaghan County Board came to an end after she announced her retirement at the recent County Convention. A lady of sincerity her devotion to Monaghan County Board and the Gaelic Athletic Association over the years is evident to everyone that knows her. The sheer scale of work and the countless sacrifices she made for the betterment of the association is a true measure of the lady. Siobhan always had a great devotion to Irish culture, sport and music and she was deeply involved in the club particularly with the Scor competitions and therefore it was no surprise that with such a strong cultural interest it was inevitable that Siobhan became involved on the Monaghan County Board and she held the remarkable record of having been on the management committee since 1992 and is reputed to have been the first women in the country to claim a county board officership. As outlined, her career started in 1992 when she joined Monaghan County Board as cultural officer a position she held for some fourteen or fifteen years. During her lengthy spell she used this office to promote Scor and the Irish language at every opportunity.  A lady known to never take a back step she moved onto the position of public relations officer (PRO) in 2007 and served the county board with distinction and never sought praise or reward for anything she did. She has been an outstanding and faithful servant to Monaghan GAA and has shown herself to be a quality worker and perhaps her crowning achievement was when the Ulster GAA Writers Association (UGGGWA) recognised her services by awarding her with the communications/PRO award. To be recognised at a national level for representing your county and club is probably one of the greatest accolades you could get and I congratulate her on this achievement, it was certainly a deserved award for her endeavours at this level. If I was asked to use one word to describe Siobhan I would find that very difficult, or even impossible, because I would have to use words like sincere, great integrity, committed, loyal, devoted, passionate, honest (she would never call a spade a shovel!!!), great sense of humor, all factors that have made her an outstanding stalwart of Monaghan County Board and our Gaelic Association. I know from speaking to Siobhan recently she remarked that her time on the County Board was, for most parts, some of the most satisfying and enjoyable of her career and in true characteristic fashion she expressed that it was a great honour to represent her club at this level and would like to thank all clubs that supported her and helped her over the years. Siobhan is married to Oille and they have six children, Gabriel, Ciara, Sinead, Niamh, Grainne and Fionnuala, all of whom have made contributions to the club particularly at Scor competitions with outstanding success. Having had the opportunity of knowing and working with Siobhan for a long number of years I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to her for her contribution towards Monaghan GAA. I extend my good wishes to her on her retirement and wish her happiness and good health to enjoy her family and friends. Thank you Siobhan.

Annual General Meeting

A gentle reminder that our Annual General Meeting will take place on Thursday 12th January 2012 at 7.00pm. At this stage nomination forms have been circulated to all club members and should be returned to club secretary Martina McKeown before the required date. You will also note that the following outgoing officers chairman Jimmy McGeough, vice-chairman Cormac McFadden and players-representative Anthony Tate are not seeking re-election. Please remember that to be eligible for election to an officer position you must be nominated by at least two club members and please, please check with members you nominate to ascertain if they are willing to go forward for election. The annual general meeting is one of the most important meetings of the club calendar and it is essential that as a club member you should take an active interest and participate in the affairs of the club.

Merry Christmas

To use the words of Judy Garland “Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Let your heart be light, Next year all our troubles will be out of sight, Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Make the yule-tide gay, Next year all our troubles will be miles away, Once again as in olden days, Happy golden days of yore, Faithful friends who were near to us, Will be dear to us once more, Someday soon, we all will be together, If the Fates allow, Until then, we’ll have to muddle through somehow, So have yourself a merry little Christmas now”. HAVE A GOOD ONE FOLKS.
