Castleblayney Notes

November 8th, 2011

Junior Cs – A little bit of history was created in the club last Sunday when we won the RFL4 league for the first time when defeating Blackhill 1-10 to 0-06 in a very sporting encounter. Blayney started very brightly with points from two minor stars David McMahon and Fergal Malone before a Blackhill free narrowed the gap. Brian McGuigan again stretched the lead to two points before more indiscipline allowed Blackhill another point from a free. Blayney were playing excellent football at this stage and long range scores from Ciaran McGinn and Fergal Duffy from play, along with a David McMahon free, pushed the lead to four before another Blackhill free left the halftime score 0-06 to 0-03. The second half began with Blackhill on top but resolute defending kept them at bay and when Mark Burns raided upfield to point Blayney settled again. A quickfire 1-1 from Ciaran McGinn left Blayney 8 ahead going into the last quarter. Two pointed frees gave Blackhill some hope but when veteran Ray McArdle pointed Blayneys win was assured. The teams traded scores in the last couple of minutes to leave the final score 1-10 to 0-06. The cup was presented to captain Ray McArdle by Brendan Farrell on behalf of the county board amid great applause.
