CLUB NOTES

Monaghan GAA “Official” Yearbook

Monaghan County Board has decided to compile an official Monaghan GAA Yearbook and the Year Book Committee has been working on the project for the last couple of months. They need the full support of the clubs to produce a quality book of which the clubs of Monaghan can be proud. The book will be produced locally using local writers & photographers and printed here in County Monaghan therefore supporting our local economy and clubs. Regarding the advertisements the Year Book Committee will be contacting business’s & individuals in our local area to support the Monaghan GAA “Official” yearbook so that funds raised for this project are retained in Monaghan GAA.

Car Treasure Hunt

We have decided to reschedule our car treasure hunt for this Saturday 13th August. Thomas McCormick has set the route which will take you on some of the most interesting and scenic areas around the village and surrounding areas and will certainly test your navigation skills along with your ability to solve cryptic clues.  So you will have plenty to look forward to so get those motors revved up. The treasure hunt will start from our GAA carpark (located on the Monaghan Road, Rockcorry) at 4pm and the last car leaving will be 5.30pm. The entry fee is €20 per car, which consists of a maximum of four people, including the driver) with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes.

BRING IT ON

The highly anticipated encounter between the superheroes and the villains is back on and will take place this Saturday 13th August. There will be plenty of caped crusaders and masked villains on show when they take part in our very first fancy dress football match. That’s right folks, fancy dress. All players will be kitted out in their favourite superheroes or villains fancy dress costumes for this encounter of epic proportions. The teams captains have been busy over the past couple of weeks recruiting characters, both male and female, to be part of their teams and no doubt will  be one of the most egg-citing games ever played at Naomh Pairc Mhuire. Do the superheroes have what it takes? Will the superheroes have enough passion & skill? Will the superheroes use their special powers and beat the villains to save the day? The only way to find out is to be there on Saturday 13th August and the game has a throw-in time of 8pm.

Sizzling Barbeque

Later that evening what better way to unwind after an entertaining football match than a barbeque in St. Mary’s Hall. Take a break from cooking and let us spoil you. Sit back, relax and enjoy some appetizing food that is guaranteed to make your taste buds tingle with sizzling jumbo sausages, grilled steaks and juicy beef burgers and wash it all down with a cool drink.

Donation to the Parish

We are very fortunate to belong to such a warm and wonderful community and after our recent vintage festivities the club, as promised, has made a sizeable donation to the parish funds.  We are very grateful for the support and the generosity we received on the day and many thanks to everyone who attended the event and we look forward to your continued support.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

With recent victories over Aughnamullen and Drumhowan in the league campaign we travelled to Scotshouse last Sunday 7th August to play Currin in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate football league high on confidence and with plenty of optimism. Unfortunately, the old adage that goals win games proved to be very true as the lads were butchered (and supporters were left traumatised) in a horror first three minutes as Currin opened up a commanding 2-2 to 0-0 lead. During the second half the lads tried desperately hard to get back into the game and they did manage to reduce the deficit to three points but Currin finished the game the strongest and secured the victory on a final score-line Currin 2-11 Rockcorry 0-12. For a more detailed match report and to view a selection of action photographs please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie. Our next outing in the league campaign is scheduled for Wednesday 24th August when we entertain Carrickmacross at 7.30pm.

McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship

Our round 2 qualifier clash against Eire Og is scheduled for Sunday 21st August and the game will take place in Tyholland at 2.00pm.

Reserve Team Fixtures

Our reserve team will have to dust off their boots and cobwebs as they are back in action on Sunday 28th August when they host Scotstown at 12 noon.

GRM Minor Football League Division 2

After the disappointing defeat against Killanny last week our minor team travelled to Tyholland on Tuesday 2nd August to play Na Fianna in the GRM minor football league campaign and got back on the winning track as they proved too clinical and collected the spoils with a 1-7 to 2-14 victory. For a full match report and action photographs please visit www.rockcorrygaa.ie. While team management will be very happy with the victory and collecting the two league points I imagine the recording of ten wides during the first half, most of them scoreable, will give them cause for concern. Over the course of the game the lads worked extremely hard for each other and showed good team spirit. The forwards Mark McGuirk, John McGuirk, Finnian Smith and John Greenan scored some beautiful points, while Iain McConnon, Lorcan Smyth, Macartan Kierans, and Eoghan MacDomhnaill was outstanding in their defence. Christopher Kilpatrick, Mark Quigley and Keelan Clerkin orchestrated a lot of attacks while Fergal McGeough and Gerard Graham were very industrious around the middle of the field. Despite the comprehensive nature of their win, we will need to up our game considerably ahead of our clash against neighbours Latton on Tuesday 16th August and our championship semi-final encounter against Magheracloone on Tuesday 23rd August. Well done lads and keep up the good work. Team & Scorers: Aaron Clerkin, Iain McConnon, Keelan Clerkin, Eoghan MacDomhnaill, Macartan Kierans, Lorcan Smyth 0-2, Christopher Kilpatrick 0-1, Fergal McGeough 1-0, Gerard Graham 0-1, Mark Quigley, Finnian Smith 0-1, John Greenan 0-2, Adrian Leavey, Mark McGuirk 1-5, John McGuirk 0-2.
