CLUB NOTES

5th July 2011

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League

Our senior team played Sean McDermott’s last Friday evening (1st July) in the Monaghan Electrical intermediate league competition and sadly they were narrowly defeated on a score-line 1-13 to 1-14. While our performance was a vast improvement on recent displays we our still proving our own worst enemy as we were guilty of over playing the ball and simply weren’t direct enough. We did enjoy decent possession and had moments (indeed had we managed to convert a number of scoring chances things may have been different) but unfortunately we lacked the clinical finishing required with many players opting to off-load the responsibility and this continues to be highly problematic issue. On a positive note, to score 1-13 is a reasonable return and would win many a league game but the overwhelming disappointing aspect of the game is the fact that we conceded 1-14, or rather the way we conceded 1-14, was inexcusable! There were times, during the game, when Sean McDermott’s brushed us aside with embarrassing ease as we struggled to get to grips with the heat of battle. One has to look no further than the opening couple of minutes were they literally ripped us apart and had us at sixes and sevens. Another contributing factor was our team lineout which was significantly reconfigured with key players such as Keith Daly (team captain), Mark McGuirk, Niall McKeown, Owen Fitzpatrick and Liam Connolly all missing due to injuries or on holidays. However, in my mind, this was a fixture which we were more than capable of winning as we still possessed an abundance of talent amongst the starting fifteen and can only regard this as two points dropped. Moving forward to our next outing against Aughnamullen this Sunday (10th July) we will need to perform much better and will need to reduce the number of mistakes in particular our wayward passing. The game has a 3.00pm throw-in time at Aughnamullen. For a full match report and to view a selection of action photographs please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie

McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship

Our first round qualifier encounter against Drumhowan has been confirmed for Sunday 17th July and the game has a throw-in time of 7.30pm with the venue still to be decided. When the two sides met earlier in the league campaign back in March just two points separated the sides on that occasion and this clash will prove to be another stern test for the lads.

Platinum Tanks Reserve League

The reserve team is back in action tomorrow night Friday 8th July when they travel to play Clones. The game has a throw-in time of 7.45pm.

Vintage Hay Festival

All system are GO, GO, GO for our vintage hay making festival which is now two weeks away and preparations are at an advanced stage with the committee working diligently behind the scenes to try and make sure the day is as enjoyable and entertaining as last year’s. It is taking place on Sunday 24th July at Dartrey sports field and like last year’s event it will feature an array of entertainment to suit everyone’s interests. Last year’s event was a fantastic day and this year’s lineup promises to be equal with an action packed itinerary of events starting with a poultry sale and car boot sale on the morning. Later that day you will be able to see working horses, vintage tractors & machinery, live traditional music, Irish dancing, dog shows, a pet corner, sheep shearing, tossing the sheaf, penalty competitions, tug-of-war, kids races, bouncing castles and loads more. For another great day’s entertainment make sure you keep Sunday 24th July free for a day of fun for all the family at our traditional vintage hay festival. AND REMEMBER KIDS ARE FREE. Please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie to view some video footage and a selection of photographs of last year’s event.

Fancy Dress Football Match

Tired of watching the same old teams playing football matches? How about watching something completely differently, weird and yet so fantastic? Interested? Well, the committee has decided to organize a football match, but not any old football match; the players will be kitted out in fancy dress costumes. That’s right folks, fancy dress! The idea has received the support from the committee who are extremely excited about this latest venture and the two appointed captains, who shall remain nameless, are carefully seeking people, both male and female, to take part. This proves to be another entertaining occasion which you don’t want to miss and if you ladies would like to see a bunch of macho blokes dressed up in fancy frocks, blonde wigs or hilarious super hero characters and make a complete fool of themselves then make sure you keep free Saturday 23rd July at 8.00pm and later that night why not call up to St. Mary’s Hall for a BBQ.

Under 12 Team

Well done to our under 12 team and their mentors last Saturday as they recorded another win in the summer league competition. Played in pleasant weather conditions it was an entertaining game with both sides producing some very good football. Despite Carrickmacross B team notching up an impressive 4-6 it was not enough to win the game as our wee footballers proved too strong and scored a remarkable 4-12 to earn the two points. This Saturday 9th July they have a home game against Donaghmoyne and the game has a throw-in time of 12 noon.
