July12th’11

Monaghan 4 – 13

Meath          0 – 1

Monaghan  County Camogie team had a convincing win over Meath in the Maire Ni Chinneide Cup which was held in Donaghamore, Ashbourne on Sunday last . The competition is based on a home and away series   where Counties Kildare, Wicklow and Meath are also participating.

On our last outing Monaghan drew with Wicklow and with a slight change in the panel  for the Meath match, the homesiders started on a good footing by not allowing Meath into the fray until a minute before the half time whistle when Bronagh Gaughan got a point and their only score of the game.

Mairead Mc. Carron put Monaghan on the scoreboard in the early stages when she intercepted a long ball in from Issy Kierans who was in flying form. With 18 minutes on the clock, Michelle Morgan  soloed the ball into the awaiting Catherine Tomany who got the green flag raised for Monaghan. The Monaghan Cailini continued on their winning way when Siobhan Mc. Kenna scored two points in succession followed by another goal from Marie Greenan.

Monaghan ran riot in the second half with a medley of scores from Marie Greenan ,Siobhan Mc. Kenna  ,Mairead Mc. Carron and Shauna Finnegan . Bernie Mc. Gahon  who kept a clean slate  was drafted into goals at short notice due to resident goalie Roisin Mc. Kenna having sustained an injury earlier in the week.

Next Sunday Monaghan travel to Naas where they take on  Kildare, Manager Malachy Treanor is confident that Monaghan can repeat the performance of last year but is treating every game with caution.

Well for our U-14 panel it was a case of ‘what might have been’ as, much to everyone’s disappointment, both the Louth U-14 and Intermediate finals were cancelled late on Saturday night due to the death of a former Board officer. With the Senior League final cancelled the previous week, it’s anyone’s guess as to when the U-14 final will now take place, but for a number of our young players the holidays beckon – naturally. So it’s back to the training pitches for another few weeks and hopefully when eventually the date is fixed we will have sufficient numbers to give it a really good ‘lash’!

Our senior players however fared much better this past week having recorded another clear round in the Westenra Arms Senior Championship by defeating Truagh on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-3.  This week (Tues.) Inniskeen provide the opposition in Drumhowan at 7.30pm and we wish the girls well. This Friday evening we take on Ballymacnab at 7.30pm, in the Armagh League, Premier Division, while on Wednesday, July 20th, Derrynoose provide the opposition.

At county level 11 of our seniors were in action against Meath on Sunday last when Monaghan  recorded a surprisingly comfortable win against a Meath ‘B’ team that had delivered a stern lesson to Kildare ‘B’ the previous week. This Sunday Monaghan travel to Naas to take on Kildare in the Máire Ní Chinnéide Cup and in wishing the entire team well we extend particular wishes to the Clontibret representatives: Shauna Finnegan, (Vice-captain), Marie and Aisling Greenan, Aideen Greene, Joanne McSkane, Michaela McGinn, Karen Boyle, Nicola Morgan, Hannah Tedore, Michelle Morgan, Catherine Tomany and Demi Mone. Best wishes to Nicola who is still shaking off the after-effects of concussion from last week’s exertions and Marie who is still trying to re-align her broken toe!
