Cavan Outshine Monaghan

Cavan        1 – 14

Monaghan 0 – 3

Cavan superior fitness paid dividends when they defeated Monaghan who were without key markswoman Eileen Mc. Elroy and the Kieran sisters Issy and Adele, in the first round of the Ulster Junior Championship in O’Neill Park, Clontibret on Saturday evening last.

Monaghan were left trailing from the onset as Cavan hit 4 points without reply, coming from Marie Brady (2) Andrea Lynch and Tina Reilly before Marie Greenan pocketed the first point from free in the 6th minute for the homesiders.

Cavan’s Sinead Mc. Kenna opened up the Monaghan defence but was denied by her namesake Monaghan goalkeeper Roisin Mc. Kenna and had to settle for a point.  The Farney side had to be content with another converted free half way through the first period before Cavan’ Brenda Lynch sent one over and applied the killer blow in a goal just before the interval. Eleanor Mc. Quaid’ superb efforts proved fruitless for Monaghan.

Cavan’ wing forward Sinead Mc. Kenna opened up a seven  point interval advantage

1 -6 to 0- 2 early on the second half and Orla Mc. Meel converted a free for the homsiders following a foul on fullback Sharon Mc. Quillan. The visitors reeled off seven points without reply to ease their side to victory.

The Monaghan girls themselves were disappointed with their display but hope it will be a learning experience and will regroup when they take on Tyrone in the same competition next Saturday evening. Venue to be confirmed.

Monaghan Team:

Roisin Mc. Kenna, Mary Meehan, Sharon Mc. Quillan, Joanne Mc. Skeane, Eleanor Mc. Quaid, Nicola Morgan, Shauna Finnegan, Siobhan Mc. Kenna, Orla Mc. Clontibret

Our county senior representatives had their first competitive outing on Saturday evening against Cavan in Clontibret in the Ulster Junior championship and the visitors ran out comfortable winners. Well done to Shauna (Finnegan), Joanne, Eleanor, Marie, Nicola, Karen and Michaela who proudly flew the Clontibret flag! Monaghan take on Tyrone this Saturday in the same competition. Venue and time to be confirmed.

On Easter Monday the U-14 County School of Excellence, which comprises a large contingent of Clontibret players, will participate in their second Blitz – this time in Darver, Co. Louth. Their opposition will be Louth, Carlow and Wicklow. Parents will be notified and as many players as possible are asked to make themselves available.

Club action got underway for our seniors on Tuesday last when they played Derrynoose in the Armagh League and went from an 8 point lead to a 1 point defeat – with only 14 players! Definitely a frustrating outcome after such a gallant challenge.  On Tuesday the team played Truagh in the first round of the Monaghan League, sponsored by ‘Jack’s’ Tydavnet. At the time of going to press no result was available. On Tuesday April 26th Clontibret play Inniskeen away.

The first round of the Go-Games for our U-12 players takes place in Armagh on Thursday April 28th. Details regarding venue and time will be circulated to players and their parents when they become available.

Recently the County Board held a very successful Sponsorship draw for the Senior League and Championship. The Westenra Arms will sponsor the premier competition while Jack’s, Tydavnet will sponsor the League. Many thanks however is due to local businesses Brennan’s Furniture, McChesney’s Garage, Treanor’s Stone-Tec and also Thomas Mc Kitterick Construction, Shantonagh for their generous support.

On the social side, best wishes to Marie Greenan and Nicola Morgan who will represent the club in Club Monaghan’s ‘Take Me Out’ this Thursday evening at 8.30pm in the Hotel Hillgrove. Anyone wishing to purchase tickets can do so by contacting either of the girls or 086 3992259.

A reminder that Mary McQuaid and a number of the senior players will compete in the Flora Ladies Mini-Marathon on the June Bank Holiday Monday. Each player’s family has been issued with a sponsorship card and all are encouraged to complete and return them as soon as possible.

Finally, a happy Easter to all our readers!!
