ROCKCORRY G.A.A.

CLUB NOTES

8th February 2011

Desertmartin 1-8   Rockcorry 1-7

After a couple of months away from the buzz of competitive football our seniors returned to action last Sunday when they travelled to Derry to play Desertmartin in the first round of the Ulster league competition. The game was played in very wet and slippery conditions and will certainly prove a big test for Daz washing powder to get the jersey’s whiter than white again! Desertmartin had the better of the opening exchanges and were first to register a score when they pointed on the 4th minute. They doubled their lead two minutes later when they notched over another point. Mark Daly opened our scoring on the 8th minute with a fine point following good work by John Greenan and a couple of minutes later Noel Carroll collected a pass from Mark Daly and he fired over a sweet point to draw the side’s level. As the game progressed Desertmartin started to apply pressure and dominated the next ten minutes and opened up a four point lead. We closed the deficit back to a single point after Conor McGeough won possession in the square and blasted the ball past the Desertmartin goalkeeper but this was quickly cancelled out as Desertmartin broke down the field at pace and fired the ball low and hard past Anthony to leave the half-time score Desertmartin 1-6 Rockcorry 1-2. When play resumed we slotted over the first score on the 12th minute but Desertmartin respond swiftly and extended their advantage when they pointed from free-kicks on the 14th and 18th minutes to open up a five point gap. Colin Quinn scored a lovely point on the 24th minute and Mark Daly closed the deficit when he slotted over two peaches on the 27th and 28th minutes to leave two points separating the sides. Mark Daly converted a free-kick on the 29th minute following good harassment by Noel Carroll and while we applied all the pressure during the final stages we could not make the ultimate breakthrough as an attempt from Lorcan Smyth was partially blocked and unfortunately just went the wrong side of the upright to leave the final score Desertmartin 1-8 Rockcorry 1-7. On reflection, it was a good competitive game of football where the lads produced a gutsy, hardworking performance in what were very difficult playing conditions. Overall the team management will be quite pleased with the level of performance and the commitment shown by all players. Please log on to www.rockcorrygaa.ie for a selection of action shots.

Fun Profile

Over the year I hope to bring you a fun profile from a member of the team or a member of the club. This section will give an insight into the various personalities who are involved in the club. This week I spoke to reserve player manager Anthony Tate and you can view his profile at www.rockcorrygaa.ie

Training

We have a tough campaign ahead of us in the intermediate league so no stone must be left unturned as we get ready for the start of the season. Training continues every Monday and Friday nights and all players are requested to attend. If however, you are unable to make it please notify Cormac, David or Mickey. Keep up the good work lads.

Senior Debuts

Two of our young players, John Greenan, and Lorcan Smyth made their senior debuts last Sunday when they played in the Ulster club football league. Also present was Christopher Greenan and while he did not get a run last Sunday I am sure he will get an opportunity in the weeks to come. All of these young players have shown at underage level they can produce the goods and they have grown from strength to strength. Hopefully, these young players will aspire to work hard and earn themselves a first team place.

Social & Presentation Night

Our social and presentation night will take place on Friday 25th February in St. Mary’s Hall. Aogan O’Fearghail, Uachtaran Chomhairle Uladh will be our special guest on the night and admission will be €10 which can be paid at the door. Refreshments will also be served on the night. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Hall of Fame Award along with the Senior, Reserve and Minor Player of the Year Awards.

Soccer Tournament

Last Saturday we held our 5-a-side soccer tournament at the Cootehill Astro Pitch and fifteen teams took part on the day including teams from Aghabog, Clones, Latton, Killeevan and a number of European clubs! The damp conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm shown by all players and supporters and the competition was eventually won out by Keith Daly’s team who defeated Noel Carroll’s team in an electrifying final by 2-0. Thanks a million to everyone for all the support especially to Cootehill Astro for the use of their great facilities, to John Sherlock, Anthony Tate and Mark Daly for doing the refereeing (who would want to be a referee!!!) and we are very grateful for the tremendous sponsorship we received from John Foy (Supervalu), Mickey Prior and John McPhillips. Well done lads.

“Rock Country” Night

Howdy partners! What y’all doin on Friday 18th March? Why not get your best bib and tucker and wiggle on down to St. Mary’s Hall for a hog-killin time! Not only will the music be fantastic but you can bend an elbow as well! Once again we find there’s no end to the talent within the village as the entertainment just keeps getting better and better with the cream of our singers coming out to perform their favourite Country & Western songs for one night only.

Congratulations and happy birthday to Bernie Sherry who celebrated her birthday last Friday evening in the Maple Bar. Bernie was joined by friends and family and all had a brilliant nights craic. There was no shortage of ‘talented’ singers performing their favourite songs on the night and I understand a number of them can’t wait for the upcoming X-Factor auditions. X-Factor here we come!!!
