Doohamlet Club Notes

Ulster Final:  Doohamlet  1-07    Lisnaskea  0-13

Doohamlets Ulster club aspirations just fell short on Saturday last in Breffni Park when we went down by 3 points to a very good Lisnaskea side.

For whatever reason Doohamlet struggled to regain any momentum that we enjoyed in our previous games and could not find fluency to our game,

In the first half Lisnaskea enjoyed the majority of possession and but for some wayward shooting could have built up a substantial lead.  Doohamlet hung in and when Niall Johnny fired to the net five minutes before the break  followed by another fine point from Shane McManus saw us going in a half time two points up  1-03 to 0-04.

We enjoyed our best period of the game just after the break when we dominated the third quarter and tagged on points from Ted Duffy, Shane McManus, Ciaran McManus and Glen Cumiskey which saw us lead by four entering the final quarter.  But Lisnaskea hit a purple patch and some inspirational scores saw them draw level and Doohamlets defence were coming under serious pressure.  Shane Connolly, Martin Hughes and Kevin McArdle all tried to stem the tide but with momentum clearly with the Fermanagh side they hit the front with time almost up and duly ran out deserving winners in the end.  No disgrace in defeat, we must hold our hands up and congratulate Lisnaskea on their victory and wish them well in the All Ireland series.  We gave it our all and the players must be commended for their efforts playing ten championship games and just falling short at the final hurdle.

Awards:  It was not all doom and gloom last week as our Club was recognised by our peers at last weeks County Convention and received two Player of the Year awards. 

Ciaran McManus received the Intermediate Player of the Year and with his commitment and inspirational leadership in the dressing room and on the field was a well deserved recipient.  Ciaran has been a Senior regular for Doohamlet since he was sixteen years of age and has given Doohamlet sterling service and has suffered some serious injuries in that time.  He also represented his Club at all levels on the Monaghan County Team and all Doohamlet Gaels will be delighted to see him recognised as Intermediate Player  of the Year 2010.

Colin Walshe was the unanimous choice as Young Player of the Year.  Colin has had a remarkable year.  He won an All Ireland title back in March with D.I.T.  He made his McKenna Cup debut with Monaghan Senior team against Fermanagh which saw him break into Seamus McEneaneys side for his National League debut against Tyrone and played the remainder of the National League campaign.  Colin made his Ulster Championship debut against Armagh and impressed in Monaghans Championship run which culminated an Ulster Final against Tyrone and a Croke Park appearance against Kildare.  He has starred for Doohamlet all season at centre half back and helped us to our first ever Intermediate title and League and Ulster club final appearances.

Well done to both Ciaran and Colin and they are an example to all our juveniles of what can be achieved with the right attitude and commitment.

Intermediate Final:    With the dust now settled on our Ulster Club campaign Doohamlet now focus on our final game of the season.  Our League final meeting with old foes Inniskeen is fixed for Sunday next in Drumhowan.

Doohamlet go into this game with a chance to win an historic double with the Intermediate Championship already secured.  No niggling injuries to report after last week and hopefully Mark Murphy and Colin Walshe have recovered from sickness.  Fergal Reel and his management team will have the players fully tuned into this game and all Doohamlet followers will wish the team every success after what has been a long but historic season.

Congratulations:  To Aoife Connolly who did the club proud reaching the Final of the recent Scor na nOg competition.  Aoife and her mother Patricia have given serious effort and prepared diligently for this competition and must be fully commended for their efforts.

Sympathy:    Deepest Sympathy to the McBennett, Casey, Cumiskey families and all the relatives and friends of the Late Tessie Mc Bennett , Grandmother to James and Gabie Casey and team captain Glen Cumiskey, Tessie was a jovial character and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
