SFL: The senior footballers played twice last week, starting with an away game in Ballybay last Wednesday. The Harps started brightly, hitting the game’s first four points with Donal Hahessy (two), Emmett McArdle and Paul Rushe on target, but Ballybay came back with a goal and the sides were level at half-time: 0-6 to 1-3. Three points from Donal and two by Ashley White kept our lads in contention right to the end, but Ballybay closed the game out to win by 1-12 to 0-11.

Team and scorers: Mark Hughes; Niall McKenna, Stephen Driver, Conn O’Hanlon; Shane Coyle, Conor Galligan, Ronan Garvey; Stephen McAleer (Capt.), Peter Coyle; Pat Murphy, Paul Rushe (0-1), Paul Kelly; Donal Hahessy (0-6, 4f), Emmett McArdle (0-1), Ashley White (0-3, 2f).

Sub: Conor Devlin for Garvey.

Our lads bounced back with a hard-earned win at home to Inniskeen in dreadful conditions on Sunday. Inniskeen raced into a seven-point lead, but points from Donal Hahessy (three), Emmett McArdle and Ashley White closed the gap to two by half-time (1-4 to 0-5). Scores by Ashley (two), Stephen McAleer and Conor Galligan edged the Harps ahead and although Inniskeen drew level, a late point by Shane Coyle proved to be the winner.

Team and scorers: Mark Hughes; Ronan Garvey, Stephen Driver, Niall McKenna; Conn O’Hanlon, Conor Galligan (0-1), Shane Coyle (0-1); Peter Coyle, Stephen McAleer (Capt., 0-1); Pat Murphy, Ashley White (0-3, 1f, 1 ’45), Paul Rushe; Donal Hahessy (0-3, 2f), Emmett McArdle (0-1), Paul Kelly.

Subs: David Loughran for Kelly, Conor Devlin for Garvey, Philip Drohan for Rushe.

The seniors are away to Clontibret tomorrow night (Wednesday) – see www.monaghanharps.gaa.ie for details.

Reserves: Neither reserve team played last week, but the O’Duffy Cup team have a busy few days ahead, with a league game away to Truagh on Sunday evening and a championship quarter-final at home to Latton next Wednesday. All support welcome.

Club Harps: Our new fundraising scheme is ‘Club Harps’, which presents a unique opportunity to invest in Monaghan Harps to maintain our central place in the community. It is targeted at past, present and future members of the club, seeking a €100 investment in the maintenance and development of our facilities. Contact any committee member for more information. We very much appreciate all support for this fundraiser.

Cúl Camp: The VHI GAA Cúl Camp at Gavan Duffy Park takes place from July 11-15, featuring football, hurling, camogie and handball and catering for boys and girls aged between 5 and 13. The camp supervisor is Ann McKenna. See our club website for more information.

U-14: Both Under-14 teams are in action at home this evening (Tuesday). The Division One team play Seán McDermotts at 6.45, while the Division Five team face Currin at 8.

U-12: The Under-12 summer leagues start this weekend, with both Harps teams away to Scotstown on Saturday (throw-in at 12 noon and 1.15). The Division One team host Carrickmacross on Tuesday evening.

Championship games: Thanks to everyone who helped out at the two championship games at Gavan Duffy Park last weekend, particularly the good numbers who braved the atrocious weather on Sunday. Well done to Brian Harvey for having the pitch in great condition and it stood up very well on a busy weekend, despite all the rain.

Over-35: The Over-35 training will continue on Friday at 7:30pm behind the lower goals on the second field. Clontibret are running a tournament within the next two weeks, so training will need to be stepped up a gear!

Congratulations: To both Michael and Rekha Duffy on their recent marriage in Leamington Spa, England. A very strong Harps contingent made the trip over to celebrate the occasion.

Sympathy: At last Thursday’s club meeting, votes of sympathy were passed to the families of Liam McCleary and Hugh McKenna’s sister Annette McKenna/Condra. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.

Flag Day: The juvenile club’s annual collection takes place next weekend. Anyone available to help out is more than welcome to volunteer for two hours in town.

Handball: Our long-running Challenger 2 league finally reached the final stage last week when Conor McCrystal and Caileán Myles defeated Jakub Szkup and Justas Dambinskas respectively in two terrific semi-finals. This was the knockout stage of our league which has been running since early in the season. Justas and Jakub were up against two of our top players but they pushed their opponents all the way. The handball on display was of a very high quality with numerous long rallies. Good luck to Conor and Caileán in the final. Congratulations to Conor Mc Donnell and Martin McEntee on winning the County Silver Masters Doubles title. They had a close contest against Paul Cassidy and Michael Houlihan of Tydavnet. Martin also took the Golden Masters Singles title. There will be a One-Wall Activity Day on Saturday, June 25 at the Harps Complex.  This will introduce one-wall handball to all age groups and is open to everyone.
