League Finals round-up: Titles for Ballybay, Donaghmoyne and Éire Óg

November 10th, 2019

Shoe City Senior Football League Final

Ballybay 2-9 Carrickmacross 1-9

Ballybay won their third SFL title in four years when they edged out Carrickmacross in the final at Páirc Grattan, Inniskeen. Goals by Christopher McGuinness and Colm Lennon put Ballybay firmly in the driving seat, but despite racking up 11 wides and missing a few goal chances, Carrick kept plugging away. Donnach Swinburne came off the bench to find the net and help the Emmets close within one score of the long-time leaders, but Ballybay held on to regain the Owen Ward Cup.

Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League Final

Donaghmoyne 3-7 Monaghan Harps 1-4

Donaghmoyne secured their place in the senior ranks for 2020 when they ran out convincing winners in last Sunday’s IFL Final against Monaghan Harps in Drumhowan. Donaghmoyne led from start to finish as they put defeats in this fixture last year and in this year’s IFC decider behind them to claim the Vincent McAviney Cup for the first time since 2014. David Garland, James McCaghey and Niall Keenan got the goals that led Donaghmoyne to the title, while Neil McAdam netted a late consolation for a wasteful Harps side.

Eurotech Junior Football League Final

Éire Óg 1-14 Clones 1-11

Éire Óg won the JFL for the first time since 2007 when they won a well-contested final against Clones at Gavan Duffy Park, Monaghan.

Michael Tierney led seven Éire Óg scorers with 0-6, while Christopher McGorman got their goal and Conor Leonard impressed throughout at midfield. Darren Freeman kicked seven points for Clones, but they fell short at this stage for the second year in a row, with injury restricting Fintan Kelly to a late cameo off the bench. The Smithborough side lost three times to their near-neighbours during 2019, but this win secured a long-awaited return to the intermediate grade.
