Sean Mc Dermotts Notes

May 20th, 2016

Club Patron Honoured

On Friday night last a large crowd gathered at our club to pay homage to our patron, Sean Mac Diarmada, with the unveiling of a commemorative plague. The ceremony, conducted by Chairperson Sean McElvaney, began with a short introduction and brief history of the patron’s association with the club. To unveil the plague, the Club had asked two of its veterans, Seamus Timoney and Seamus Mulligan. Both men have been tremendous servants to the club at every level and it was fitting that they were part of the ceremony. This was followed by a discussion with Mr Gerard McAtansey on the life and times of Mac Diarmada. Mr Mc Atansey, a historian and author of ‘Sean Mac Diarmada- The Mind of the Revolution, captivated his audience with an incredible insight into the background to the rising and subsequent execution of Sean Mac Diaramada. This was a terrific evening of history, nostalgia and memories which marked the clubs recognition of its Patron.

Junior Football Championship

Well done to our senior squad who entered the Junior Championship race again with a comprehensive win against Corduff in the opening round. While the scoring difference was substantial we will not loose the run of ourselves. The summer months will no doubt present greater hurdles when our scoring prowess will be called upon. The competition has started and we are off and running in the championship.

Minors

Our match last week was away to Rockcorry. With Sean Grant injured Darren Morgan played full forward and caused a lot of difficulty for Rockcorry by scoring 2 goals. He also won a lot of possession which benefited Ryan Mc Elvaney. Tommy Mc Phillips was secure in goals and his kick outs have greatly improved. Marty Mc Guirk and James Clerkin were very solid in the defence. Team captain Paddy Mc Philips held the centre of defence with James Murphy & Shane Kelly at half back. Aaron Mc Nally in the centre scored two 45 conversions which is a great skill to have. Mark Murphy worked hard in midfield as did Ollie Mc Clave and Oisin Mc Kenna. Jason Kearns again scored some great long range points and also two goals. Our two German visitors Tobias & Ole also scored a point each, Ryan Connolly came on as a sub near the end. The Sean’s were easy winners . Matches are now postponed until July due to the exam break and we wish all our participants good luck with their exams.
