Rockcorry Notes

April 21st, 2016

Hard Luck Monaghan

Hard luck to the Monaghan under 21 team who were sadly defeated by Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final last Saturday in Tullamore. It was an amazing match and there were some outstanding scores from both sides and it was a thrilling encounter to watch. With plenty of talent coming through the ranks there should be a good feeling in the camp and I imagine focus will now switch towards the opening round of Ulster Championship against Down in June. Keep up the good work lads.

Laochra – The GAA Commemorates 1916

As you may know, the GAA is planning a special event to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising. Following the Division One and Two Allianz Football League Finals at Croke Park on Sunday 24th April they will present a show that will commemorate the Rising, the Proclamation, the story of Gaelic Games and the GAA’s role since 1916. The show will incorporate large-scale innovative theatre, dance, song, poetry and pageantry. They are confident that this production will enhance what is already an eagerly anticipated Allianz League Finals double header. Their goal is to fill Croke Park for these two major finals and an event that is of major significance in terms of the GAA contribution to the commemoration of the 1916 Rising. They need your support in ensuring that it will be staged in front of a full house in Croke Park.

Monaghan Electrical IFL

Our senior team travelled to Grattan Park last Monday evening (18th April) to play Inniskeen in the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate league and one may be forgiven for getting a sense of déjà vu! While the lads showed plenty of heart and produced a brave and courageous performance it unfortunately lacked the finished product. Inniskeen, on the other hand, were far more clinical in front of the posts and secured a comfortable victory on a score-line Inniskeen 1-14 Rockcorry 0-5.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 12

Our under 12 footballers returned to action last Saturday 16th April when they played host to Eire Og in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg Spring Football league (Zone G) competition. The lads battled hard and got off to a very encouraging start and capitalised on a couple of passing errors from Eire Og to put some lovely scores on the board and after a very entertaining twenty minutes we enjoyed a 0-5 to 0-2 lead at the midway stage. When the game resumed both sides continued to play some high quality football and traded scores early during the second half. However, as the half unfolded our excellent work-rate was rewarded with a couple of match winning points as we secured the victory on a final score-line Rockcorry 0-13 Eire Og 0-7. Overall, this was a very enjoyable game and while we were never behind in the match Eire Og pushed us all the way. Great credit must go to both sets of players for a terrific performance as they all demonstrated great heart and skill throughout the match. Well done boys and girls and keep up the good work.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 14

Our under 14 footballers are back in action this weekend when they travel to play Ballybay on Saturday 23rd April and throw-in time is 2pm.

Gerry’s Prepared Veg – Under 16

Our under 16 footballers commenced their season last Thursday 14th April when they travelled to Smithboro to play Eire Og in the Gerry’s Prepared Veg league division 3. Unfortunately, due to other commitments this evening I was not able to attend the match but I caught up with the team manager Anthony Tate and he said that “it was a cracking game of football between two evenly matched sides.” He pointed out that over the course of the match the sides could hardly be separated and approaching the closing stages it was very tense with very little between the teams. However, towards the end of the encounter the lads just tired and Eire Og managed to notch over some late scores to seal the victory on a score-line Eire Og 6-13 Rockcorry 7-7. While it was heart-breaking to lose the match Anthony was upbeat and was very impressed with the performance from the lads. He stated that all players put in a huge effort and showed fantastic work ethic, great heart and credit to them for not giving up. Before leaving the house, his final note was that he hoped to see all players at the next training session which will be arranged next week. Their next outing is on Thursday 21st April when they host Scotstown at Pairc Naomh Mhuire and throw-in time is 7pm.

Minor Football League Division 3

Our minor footballers were in action last Tuesday 12th April when they played Latton at Pairc Naomh Mhuire in the Minor Football League Division 3. The match was played in slippery and sticky conditions which were very demanding but all players have to be commended for their efforts in difficult circumstances. The first period was evenly contested and when we found our rhythm the lads played some good football and at the break we were unlucky to be behind as Latton held a two point advantage leading 0-3 to 0-5. When played resumed Latton started brightly and began to control proceedings and notched up some impressive scores. While we did create scoring opportunities to reduce the deficit we sadly wasted a lot of chances whereas Latton finished strong and tapped over a flurry of scores to secure the spoils on a final score Rockcorry 0-5 Latton 3-12. Their next outing is on Tuesday 19th April when they travel to play Cremartin and throw-in time is 7.00pm. On Tuesday 26th April they have a home match against Doohamlet at 7pm and on Tuesday 3rd May they travel to Tyholland at 7.30pm.

The next blitz for the under 8 footballers will be on Saturday 14th May and it will also be an all-county go games blitz taking place at Cloghan between 12 noon and 2pm.

Car Wash Fund Raiser

Our underage players will be holding a car wash fund raiser on Saturday 30th April to raise funds for the juvenile section of the club. That’s right folks, they will clean and polish your car and have it absolutely sparkling. It takes place at Gerry & Andrea Coyle’s Service Station who have once again kindly donated their fine facilities to accommodate the event and we sincerely thank them for their sponsorship and generosity. Please let your family and friends know and please support this car wash fundraiser and get your car down for a proper wash and make a donation towards the juvenile section of our club and as always your support of this event will be deeply appreciated.
