The Killian Mc Elroy memorial blitz took place last weekend in the Bawn handball club entries for the blitz included players from Carrickmacross, Corduff,Kingscourt,Tydavnet, Emyvale and Bawn, it’s the 3rd time the club has run this event and it’s going from strength to strength, this time there was a juvenile section which was won by Jamie King from Corduff with Ben mc geough from bawn runner up. The adult section started on Friday night with some great battles to see who would make the last 16, a lot of local lads fell at this hurdle but we also had a few surprise winners, great display especially from some of the new lads in the corduff club, Saturday seen the senior players who had been seeded into the second round take to the court and despite some close calls they all dispensed with there opponents, Friday night had taken its toll on some and we had some injury withdraws. players in the last 8 were Gavin Coyle,Gary mc Elroy,Cormac mc Mahom, Conor mc Gorman, James Gavigan, Kieran Brennan, Michael clerkin and Michael Duffy Jr. Semi final seen Gavin v Cormac and Connor v James this started on Sunday afternoon with a good crowd of supporters watching the action, Cormac dft Gavin in the first semi with a fantastic display of top class handball with both lads displaying some great skill, the second semi was another cracking match with conner eventually overcoming James by only a few points, the juvenile competition then took place over 2 games with Jamie king coming out on top over Ben mc geough, Ben put up a great fight but Jamies killshots and speed were just too much for him. We then had a fantastic final where kingscourts finest Cormac mc mahon took on the pride of carrickmacross Connor o Gorman, both lads are super fit and neither gave up on any chance of getting a point and some unbelievable shots were taken, Cormac emerged the winner over 2 fantastic games that delighted the watching crowd and some people who had never seen handball before couldn’t believe the skills of the two lads. The mc elroy family would like to thank all those who took part in the competition and helped with refreshments and refereeing, your support is greatly appreciated and hopefully we can do it bigger and better next year.
