Owen Lennon has retired from inter-county football after 15 campaigns with Monaghan. Speaking to the Irish Independent, Lennon said that a long-standing ankle injury had forced him to make the decision to step away from the county scene, which he has been part of since late 2000. An Ulster All-Star midfielder in 2007, Lennon overcame injury problems to captain Monaghan to end a 25-year wait for an Ulster SFC title in 2013 and he went on to win a second provincial medal last July. The Latton man made 129 senior competitive appearances for Monaghan, with 44 coming in the championship. Lennon, admitted to Colm Keys that it was “a bittersweet feeling” to end his time with Monaghan and he thanked his wife Oonagh and all his former teachers and club, county and college coaches for their support. Monaghan GAA thanks Owen for his outstanding service to the county.
