Toome Notes

September 17th, 2015

Seniors: It was one of those days when things simply didn’t happen for us in last Sunday’s Championship semi final. Well done to Rockcorry, who deserved their win on the day. There were a few bright spots however, Frank’s wonderful goal and Mark’s determined performance when he came on were reminders of the talent coming through, while Mattie’s driving runs in the second half showed a desire which will hopefully bring us a step further in 2016. If this team stays together and puts the shoulder to the wheel next year, then anything is possible. Foireann: H Connolly; J Murphy, A Lambe, D McKenna; M O’Reilly, S McMahon; R Murphy; C Quinn, S Lambe; G Wilson, C Wilson, L McCooey; F Connolly, G Flanagan, S Moore. Subs: F Quinn, M McMahon, S McCooey, A Kelly; C McGovern, A McDonnell, E Donaghy; C McKenna, S Quinn, K O’Reilly.

Under 14s: Saturday was a day that will live long in the memory, as the Clan Na Gael under 14s captured the League title with a fantastic win over near neighbours Donaghmoyne. We started in all out attack mode, and well taken goals from Liam Murphy and Cian Watters gave us a lead that proved to be the difference at the end. Cian McEneaney delivered a man of the match performance in goals, pulling off 3 outstanding saves. Sean Callan did a great man marking job on the Donaghmoyne dangerman, keeping him scoreless, while Dean Rooney’s resiliance, particularly in the last 10 minutes, kept our clean sheet intact. Our young wing backs, Eoghan Gorman and Joseph McMahon worked hard, Joseph had to come off at half time having winded himself pulling off a brilliant block. Igor Wotjas was effective as ever at centre back, with numerous interceptions.

We dominated the midfield exchanges, Big James McMahon worked his sock off and had a great tussle with his marker, his crucial final point to extended our lead to 5. Jason Irwin was impressive throughout, at the end of a fine year. Captain Kevin Tibby led by example, and was involved in most of our scores. Andrew Connolly had a great game, particularly in the second half, while Patrick McMahon’s skill and pace caused problems for the Donaghmoyne defence – his highlight was kicking a ’45 having just come back on after injury. Goals win games, and our inside line of Liam and Cian did extremely well. We had plenty of help to come on also, Ryan Buckley did well at wing back, Conor McKernan provided strength and aerial ability. Conor Hamilton’s goals have been crucial this year and he almost got another on Saturday, while Red Tom McMahon worked hard when introduced. Young Shane McCooey has impressed all year, while Cormac McDonnell must surely have more medals than his father at this stage! Many thanks to our supporters from both clubs – your encouragement and positivity gave the lads the backing that they needed! Thanks to The Old Coach Inn for laying on post match food and entertainment. Final score: Clan na Gael 2-5, Donaghmoyne 0-6

Cangratulations: To Aidan and Mary McArdle on the birth of baby Mairead! The commencement of ladies football will surely be next in Aidan and Mary’s long list of jobs!
