Round-up (September 5-7)

September 8th, 2014

Monaghan’s minor hurlers fell just short in their All-Ireland MHC ‘C’ Final against Mayo in Ballinamore on Saturday. Despite losing star player Conor Boyle to a bad hand injury early on, Monaghan were competitive throughout and even though Mayo hit the net twice on their way to a 2-6 to 0-6 half-time lead, a Ciarán Cassidy and some Ronan Curran points set up a big finish, which saw the holders retain the title on a 2-11 to 1-10 scoreline.

Ballybay and Truagh have to meet again to claim the last place in the Gormley uPVC Senior Football Championship semi-finals after even extra-time couldn’t separate them in Clontibret on Saturday. Goals by Daniel McKenna and Niall Coyle had Truagh in command at one stage, but Shane McGuinness netted a penalty to help Ballybay to come back and they ended up all-square after 60 and 80 minutes. The replay will be in Clones on Sunday, while Castleblayney will play defending champions Scotstown in the first semi-final after a Ciarán Hanratty goal helped them grind past Latton in Inniskeen on Friday night.

Donaghmoyne and Inniskeen have claimed semi-final places in the McGuigan Builders Intermediate Football Championship. Mark Daly kicked five first-half points as Rockcorry got the better of Tyholland on Friday night, while the other Round 2B game saw Brendan McNally’s contribution of 0-5 guide Corduff past Emyvale.
